i also misspoke, the island groups are the north, middle, and south, and i forgot the amami islands (the top islands), i think okinawa main island is included there, then the miyajojima (miyako shima, miyako islands) - the middle items, and then the yaeyama islands, the bottom islands. (the daitou islands are at the very bottom, but only after wwii inhabited, i believe.) this is all from memory and past and recent research, so please forgive me if i’m wrong 💓

also, in hawaii, the word that okinawans called mainland japanese are naichi (meaning the mainland). so my okinawan family referred to mainland japanese as naichi, and my japanese family refer to okinawa as ryuukyuu. (okinawans also to this day often refer to themselves not only as uchinaanchu, but as ryukyuan. ryukyu is sometimes more referenced than okinawan, because ryukyu refers to the ryukyu kingdom (the nation of all of the islands).  okinawa and japan have a similar history to hawaii and the united states. this is a very common comparison, not only because many okinawan emigrants came to hawaii in the late 1800s/early 1900s, but also because mirroring government occurences happened to their kingdoms. (i read queen liliuokalani’s memoir a few years ago, around the time she wrote aloha oe, and she writes of the kingdom of hawaii before the united states overthrew their kingdom and named them as a territory, and later, a state.)
