Most Christians have never been asked to think about what they believe. Esther Ideh explains why that's costing us a generation — and what it looks like to give God your mind, not just your heart.
In this episode of The Shining Light Show, Esther Ideh joins Flourish for a conversation about apologetics, the fear of God, and why so much of modern Christianity asks nothing of us. She argues that we were handed a faith that treats the mind as optional — and that the questions this generation is asking are not attacks, they're an invitation the church keeps refusing.
We talk about why theology was once considered the highest form of education, what it means to fear God rather than merely love what He gives, and why a church waiting to escape is not a church ready for His return.
Questions answered in this episode
What is apologetics? Esther defines it simply: knowing what you believe and being able to defend it.
Can you be intelligent and still believe in God?
What is the difference between loving God and fearing God?
If Satan didn't exist, would you still serve God?
Why do so many Christians treat the rapture as an escape plan?
How should believers think about persecution and suffering?

I’m only 16, yet I’ve grown up seeing my mom be the NSPPD in the morning, prayer, speaking in tongues, the whole “on fire” Protestant every day kind of Christian, the kind of Christianity that we always see in Africa. But my relationship with God has never been like that. It’s been very solemn, very personal. I’m not the fire and brimstone kind of Christian, if that makes sense. I have always, even from the moment that my mom taught me about Jesus, approached Him in a very calm and personal, almost friendship-kind of way. Obviously, I revere Him as King and as all that He is, but our relationship has always been very friendship-like. Recently, I feel like I’m in a season where I’m beginning to not just feel my Christianity, but also include my thinking and logic. I’ve started reading the Bible from the beginning again, just so that I can get the whole story from a logical standing and not just emotion focused, and I’m gaining an understanding of things even in places like Genesis 1, which I’ve read countless times. There are certain new things I’m noticing that I didn’t even notice the previous times I read those same chapters I’m even questioning what denomination I belong to, whether I believe in Protestantism, Catholicism, or Orthodoxy. When I have questions about the wording in Scripture, or even certain things that He does or certain things that He lets happen, I’m able to get answers to my questions. He answers my questions.
And I just really, really hope that after many Christians watch this episode, they’re not scared to approach the Lord with their intelligence, and with the brains that He has, in His infinite kindness, bestowed upon them.
The Lord created us with intelligence. And especially for people who are academics like myself, or who are very brain-thinking, “I always have questions” kind of people, I think it’s important that we understand that we can approach God with our minds as well.
So I hope that anyone who’s an academic, or even just someone who asks a lot of questions, can approach the Lord not just with their heart, but with their minds, and with every part of them.
