Welcome back to another video, and another true crime case. Today I’m covering the murder of Diane Jones, a thirty-five-year-old mum from Coggeshall in Essex who got out of a car at her own front gate on a Saturday night in July nineteen eighty-three, and was never seen alive again. Three months later, a man beating through the undergrowth on a pheasant shoot in Suffolk found her body in a small wood at Brightwell, near Martlesham, thirty miles from home. Her skull had been broken in four places.
Diane was married to the village doctor. On the night she disappeared, in front of a pub full of witnesses, she said she didn’t want to go home with him because she was frightened of what he’d do to her. He carried her out of the pub over his shoulder. And then he waited nine days before telling the police she was missing.
Dr Robert Jones was arrested twice for her murder, once in nineteen eighty-three and again in nineteen 90. Both times he walked out without being charged. He denied killing his wife for the rest of his life, moved to France, and died there in two thousand and twenty-three at the age of eighty. Nobody has ever stood trial for what happened to Diane.
