It’s Not Freedom Anymore — Americans Are Moving Into RVs Because They Have No Choice
Video description:
RV living was once sold as freedom: open roads, national parks, retirement, and the ability to travel wherever you wanted. But for a growing number of Americans, the reality behind living in an RV looks very different.
Across the United States, the housing affordability crisis, rising rent, high home prices, inflation, insurance costs, and the shortage of affordable housing are putting enormous pressure on working families, retirees, seniors, and lower-income households. Harvard’s 2026 housing research shows that renter cost burdens remain at record levels, while affordable units continue to be in short supply. Joint Center for Housing Studies
In this documentary, we explore the changing reality of RV living in America—why some Americans are considering RVs, campers, trailers, mobile homes, and other forms of alternative housing when traditional housing becomes financially out of reach. We look at the hidden costs of full-time RV living, finding legal places to park, campground expenses, repairs, utilities, healthcare, employment, and what happens when an RV becomes more than a recreational vehicle—it becomes home.
The RV Industry Association reports that 8.1 million U.S. households own an RV, although importantly, RV ownership should not be confused with full-time RV residence; the association itself classifies RVs as temporary living quarters rather than housing. RVIA
This is a deeper look at America’s housing crisis in 2026, the affordability problems changing how people live, and the difficult choices some Americans face when a traditional home or apartment no longer fits their budget.
Topics covered: RV living in America, full-time RV living, housing crisis 2026, affordable housing crisis, rising rent, cost of living, Americans living in RVs, alternative housing, working-class Americans, retirees living in RVs, homelessness, housing affordability, van life, mobile living, and the American Dream.
