I Was NOT Ready for How Fast the BMW S 1000 XR Is!

I’ve ridden plenty of adventure bikes, but the BMW S 1000 XR is something completely different.

In this video, I take the BMW S 1000 XR out for a proper test ride to find out what this sport-touring machine is really like on the road. With its 1000cc inline-four engine, superbike-inspired performance and upright riding position, the XR promises an incredible combination of speed, comfort and practicality.

But just how fast is it? And does the S 1000 XR actually deliver the best of both worlds?

I’ll be putting the bike through its paces, looking at the engine performance, handling, riding position, comfort and overall experience to see what makes the BMW S 1000 XR so special.

One thing is for sure… I was NOT ready for how hard this thing pulls!

Yep that’s my bucket list bike. Got a 2023 1250 GS. That I love dearly. That in-line 4 on a near perfect Beamer frame would be an absolute weapon in the Smokey Mountains. Cheers from Georgia 🍊

I did a demo ride on one about a month ago. I freakin' loved it. Granted, I only rode it for about 45 minutes or so. I have a 1300GS, which I also love, but something about that XR got me thinking about a lateral trade. Also, the bike I rode was still in its initial break-in period and the rev limit was maxed at around 8000rpm, which it looks like the bike you're on was too. So, I'm pretty sure that's the bike only 2/3 awake. The last 1/3 is where it really screams.

I get tempted by a bike in this class but I hate riding in traffic, it's the main reason I ride dual-sport bikes, the dirt roads hardly have any traffic.

Yours is still limited, mine goes to 12500 rpm, wiht the light flashing at 11000, so i go to 127 kph in first gear.
You, sir ride like a gs. Keep the bike between 9000 and 11500 rpm, if you really want to test it.
Shifting points in kph:
125 to 2nd,
150 to 3th
175 to 4th
200 to 5th and 225 to 6th

Ive a massive lust for one of these baby's, but not sure for the Irish roads, coming from an f800gs, the sensible option is a 1250 gs . But, I don't know any XR owners and most people i know are Gs owners. Needed this review. 👍

How can you tell anything with the redline set at 8500?

This bike is in break in mode, the redline is artificially low until the first service. If you thought the bike was fast after 6K, just wait until you hit 8K and keep it going until the real redline at around 12K.

I had a K 1600 GTL. It was a absolutely incredibly fast confident bike. It was nothing to go 150 miles an hour incomplete Comfort. I had it for three years and it was a beautiful bike to ride, but it was just way too fast or properly put way too easy to go fast on and if you’re not a great driver, you probably should get a GSA, which is what I have now.

(Launch control activation) — The comments already mentioned the break in period but in the future if you want to launch it, hold down the ignition button down for a few seconds then it will go into launch mode. Otherwise great review 😃

I realized already while doing the riding training, when getting my licence, that I need to ride cruisers, otherwise I will be tempted to go too fast. Bike like that would be a death sentence probably.

Rode one, wanted to like it but no way. Vibrations, and that high revving in line four in my year was a big no.
The lack of torque compared to a 1250 and 1300 GS was disappointing.
Give me a twin over an in line four any day .

GS has a Quick Shifter??? Kidding right? That's what they tell you :) I owned 1200 GS and GSA and also 1250 GS and GSA and love them all. Thinking that the 1300 would be an improved version, in the winter when BMW dealers were discounting the 1300GS like $6K, I traded my M sport XR and got the 1300GS. Was I wrong! After 4 months and painful 500 miles, I went back to the XR. Those who has been riding the GS bikes for a while would know what I'm talking about. You can ride the XR as slow as you did because of the cable clutch. It is much easier to modulate. Having the power kick in after 6K rpm makes this bike super rider friendly in the city, but when you get to the twisties it will become a different animal. Cheers.
