Guyyyys I forgot to add Hexxat (lesbian for female) and Dorn (Bi for both) to the list of people you can romance. Forgive me!!! They are great options and were added later (both evil though)!!

I just wanna add that I admire you so much for recognizing that you have something valuable to offer about a game that people have been playing for nearly 30 years. Your tips sound like they come from a place of care and experience, your vulnerability towards things you've struggled with about the game is refreshing, and the editing is so tight and entertaining

You successfully got me into Baldur's Gate 1 a few weeks ago, and I'm really glad! It's been great

I was a wee lad when i played it for the first time back in the day. I am really shocked youngsters are still talking about this gem, and with SUCH PASSION 😍

Here I go again playing through a 200 hour game again thanks to you. Good tips for beginners!

Woah, after like 10 BG beginners guide videos I finally found one that actually had helpful info and didn't just repeat everything that was already explained in the tutorial and prologue lol awesome video

When I first played BG1, I was very impressed with the sound effects.  They added a lot to the wilderness areas.

Make sure to read your journal! Not only does it have valuable information about the quests you embark on and the overall story, it also adds so much to the character of the protagonist. Baldur's Gate has what I'd call a partial blank slate. Their race, class, and abilities are entirely up to you, but you always come from the same place, with a predetermined backstory. If you want to roleplay, the journal is a great place to look for ideas.

It's me! I am one of the people you convinced to play BG1 and I've been enjoying it. I'll eventually go back and finish BG3. But i do love the face i can run this game on just about anything.

Hello!
Sorry but just a quick nitpick correction.  I feel like you already know this but simply misstated.
At 2:25 you say a Turn = 6 seconds, but it's actually a round.  A turn = 10 rounds (60 seconds)
I mainly point this out because even the editing on screen says Turn = 6 seconds and the point of the video is to help people learn BG1 which I really appreciate!
Thank you

If Minsc is wearing leather armor he can Hide in Shadows and be an excellent scout so you don't blindly walk into big encounters.

I am so proud of you for powering through this beast of a game and for making such a decent guide that will hopefully help newer players.

I should have seen this video way before I got into the game for 20 hours. As someone who has never played any baldurs gate game, this vidoe is the best one so far for someone who is a beginner. Thank u so muchh !!

Thank you so much for making this video. Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 are my favorite games of all time, and it makes me so happy to see more people getting into them ❤ Hamsters and rangers everywhere, rejoice!

There is a small missinformation about how XP leveling works for companions. If You pick up at start companions - game checks XP of your hero than synch it with party. If You remove someone from the party - this character is broken and it stuck at lvl left it with. So for example if You pick up Jahira at Inn and insta leave Her there - She will stay with lvl You encountered Her with. But if You go solo first (there is way to get tons of XP as solo at start) and go to recruit companions later on - they will have their XP synched to Yours.

Most people are going to be playing the enhanced editions and with that in mind: if you are a thief (re-roll and make a dwarf/half-orc fighter/thief instead - jk) or for any thief characters in the party go into the character sheet screen where all the stats are set them up to either constantly search for traps or attempt to hide - you can even turn off any impulse to attack of their own volition at all which is important if they're being used to stealth scout ahead. With Imoen and main character as a half-orc fighter/thief built for stealth you can sort of leap frog through a lot of early dungeons (firewine, ruins of Ulcaster) - have her spot traps, wait a bit, advance main character in stealth to the limits of vision, bring Imoen up looking for traps, ensure there's none ahead, press on ward with stealth. Invisibility lasts 24 hours and won't break until hostile actions are taken (attack, set a trap, cast a spell targeting enemies, etc) so potions of invisibility or a friendly cast from a wizards or sorcerer are brilliant, turn off the thief's attack compulsions search for traps - s/he can literally stand next to monsters and just poke around for traps, it's pretty useful ESPECIALLY if you play Icewind Dale.

New player-tips: Invest in ranged weapons initially. Longbows are better in BG1, but if you plan on playing the whole BG Saga as ranged go with Shortbows as they wind up significantly better - they wind up with more attacks by way of the late game shortbows in 2 and throne of bhaal being INSANELY fast and having extra attacks enchanted right on them. Especially the first game ranged weapons are outstanding, it was a quirk of second edition that ranged weapons were MUCH better especially early on - in a neat way the events of the games Iron Crisis (not a spoiler its literally in the opening lines) sees your non-magical weapons made of metal occasionally break on nat 1's. I am convinced the developers made the game as a love letter to 2nd edition and wanted to help people avoid early game pitfalls by making ranged weapons more attractive and even giving one of the earliest companions you get a fighter druid so she straight up side steps the metal weapons breaking by swinging a good old fashioned club. Its a really masterfully subtle piece of good game design whose purpose has probably been lost to history but if you're an old Grognard then IYKYK sort of thing and you can appreciate it. Optimally - one pip in short bow for anyone that can use it will carry the early game. Slings for anyone that can't, two pips if they're a fighter/cleric or fighter/druid, slings are thrown weapons so they factor your strength bonus into them for damage but are slower than bows having only one attack to the two you get with bows. Daggers and Axes are interesting in that they can pull double duty as they have ranged options (in it relies on a lot more knowledge than I am going to drop but throwing daggers wind up very strong in BG2) so they are also strong picks but honestly the good ones come much later and they have small ammo stack sizes at first, but if you're comfortable with it daggers are good in the first game and Axes are plentiful and deadly effective throughout the entire Saga and as such are a great pick for Fighters, Fighter/Thiefs, rangers, barbarians, and even paladins melee options.

Bonus tip for those who want the easiest time imaginable: Make a half-orc Fighter/Thief if you want a warrior type who can spot traps, or a Half-Orc Fighter/Cleric if you want a spell caster that can lay a smackdown. Reroll until you can dump all stats and get 19 strength, 18 dex, and 19 con, the other stats don't even matter (though IIRC Fighter Cleric won't let you dump wisdom any lower than 9 or 12) and are only even checked against in conversations a few times in the entire original Saga. Half-orcs got added into the game in BG2, and retroactively into BG1 with the once popular mod BGtutu that was basically what the enhanced edition is today with a harder installation process. AD&D 2nd edition really wasn't built with 19 strength in mind - it's stronger than bears and ogres in the rule set. 19 and up were the domain of Giants, Dragons, and Mythical creatures of the like - its why the magical belts and potions in the setting are called "Potion(/Belt) of Hill Giant Strength" for example. You will be hitting things FAR harder than the game is ready for at low levels. Be warned its ch-easy at times but not actually cheating - you're basically a Herculean figure of myth. Alternatively make an Elf Ranger choosing the Archer kit, specialize in short bows, dual wield longswords if caught in melee (you probably won't as most things will die in the hail of machinegun fire you lay down before they reach you) set your AI script to constantly stealth (by the end of BG1 an Elf ranger will out perform even Thieves dedicated to Hiding and Moving Silently unless they're halflings), scout eliminate target(s) re-stealth. All three setups can actually solo pretty easily if you play smart about it.

Thanks for making this!

18 intelligence is a must for mages cause during the game you can get 1 bonus point and then your intelligence is 19 you are able to learn every spell in the game from scrolls which is absolutely amazing since learning spells from scrolls is a good way to earn xp

21:48 Clerics wear plate armour, they are find with melee

Great video. Alot of really solid info here. Well done. Thanks for helping to bring back the OG BG
