I hadn’t visited my 95-year-old grandpa on my mom’s side for quite a long time. When I finally went to see him, I noticed that he had several wounds, and my mom and I urged him to get a medical checkup at the hospital. But he refused.
This visit made me think more deeply about aging, the final years of our lives, and what it means to grow old in rural China. My grandpa seemed to have already made peace with whatever may come. Decades ago, he even bought his own coffin and placed it in his home.
I started wondering what the twilight years look like for elderly people living in rural China. For some, life can be especially difficult when they have little to rely on, sometimes without even a pension. My grandpa is fortunate to have a pension, and in his own way, he seems prepared to accept whatever comes next.
But I’m not. And neither are the rest of our family.
This visit left me with a lot of thoughts about family, aging, and the things we’re not always ready to face.
I hope you enjoy this video, and if you’re interested in honest stories about everyday life, family, and the less-seen side of life in rural China, consider subscribing to my channel. ❤️
