Louis XIV of France (1638-1715): A biography of the Sun King, from absolutism to European wars and the court of Versailles.

Ascended to the throne at the age of four under the regency of Cardinal Mazarin, Louis XIV experienced the Fronde revolt as a child and took personal power upon the cardinal's death in 1661. He entrusted the economy to Jean-Baptiste Colbert, strengthened the kingdom's administration with intendants, and in 1682 officially moved the court to Versailles, transforming a hunting lodge into the political center of France. In 1685, he revoked the Edict of Nantes. His reign lasted seventy-two years, the longest in European history.
