Juilliard-trained opera singer and vocal coach Maggie Reneé reacts to Rush’s iconic track “The Spirit of Radio.”

In this reaction, I break down the rhythmic complexity, tight ensemble playing, and vocal phrasing that make this performance feel so sharp and energetic.

👇 In this video we explore:
• Rhythm and timing in complex rock music
• Vocal phrasing over shifting grooves
• Precision vs feel in performance
• Ensemble coordination and control
• What musicians can learn from Rush’s style

If you love progressive rock, technical musicianship, and vocal analysis, this one is seriously impressive.

For the record, this song was out the year before "Don't Stop Believin'"

I love that it’s written “the words of the PROFITS” …

And these three guys would play their incredibly complex songs live... perfectly

Permanent Waves predates Journey's Escape album.

The Rush rabbit hole is so deep that most of us never escape.

This was fantastic! Yes, Neil Peart is amazing on the drums, and he also writes all the lyrics! 😊

3:02 CFNY-FM - 102.1 - alternative radio station in Toronto. Their on-air motto was "The Spirit of Radio," and that's where Rush got the name for this track. There's a story behind all this, definitely worth a deep-dive.

CFNY still exists to this day.

FYI, the young woman holding up the Rush album in the second verse is Donna Halper, former music director at station WMMS in Cleveland, who put Rush on the musical map when she played their song "Working Man" while she went for a bathroom break and it instantly resonated with her mostly blue-collar audience; they performed it live in Cleveland as part of their 2011 Time Machine Tour, proving that they could still rock the house in their late 50s, so I hope you have a chance to see it. Have a beautiful day, and Rush on!

As a classical artist, you definitely should do the entire RUSH “2112” opus next.

The band was just coming off their third album “Caress of Steel” which flopped. If their next album failed it would be the end of the band. The record company wanted them to do something more commercial, short two minute songs for the radio.

Instead they decided if they were going to fail they would fail on their own terms. The entire 20 minute A side of the album 2112 was a seven part masterpiece. It not only skyrocketed RUSH to the top, but also cemented them as a progressive rock supergroup.

Three asteroids have been named after the band members. Asteroid 12272 Geddylee, Asteroid 19155 Lifeson, and Asteroid 23469 Neilpeart.

My dream is to have NASA land probes on those asteroids then on February 1, 2112 (the 136th anniversary of the album’s release) broadcast the final lines of 2112 so all three signals reach the earth at the same instant.

If you know, you know.

The different song styles also represented all the choices that were on radio, at your fingertips

Peart deliberately put in the " Sound of Silence " reference.

9:26 “That drummer is insane by the way” while they are in the middle of switching to 7/4 time without us even noticing.

That phenomenal drummer was also the phenomenal lyricist for RUSH.

Can't wait to see Rush in Brazil next year. Will be a real treat.

@ggwalker55 2 months ago

Not only was Peart a supreme drummer, he wrote all the lyrics for their songs.

Your favorite drummer’s, favorite drummer.

One of my favorite memories of seeing Rush live a few times was this song. When Geddy says "Concert halls," the lights in the entire arena come on to illuminate the crowd - and everyone goes nuts. Every time.

@shure81 2 months ago

Thank you so much for really taking the time to understand the lyrics!

12:19 “I can’t believe it’s been this long of Rush being in existence and I never heard them like this.”

I know the feeling. I’m 46 and only went down the Rush rabbit hole THIS YEAR! I was a little familiar with them before but now I know them better than I know any band or musical artist I’ve been a fan of in my whole life. I’ve been speedrunning a lifetimes worth of being a Rush fan into these last several months. Don’t stop. There is so much amazing music in those 19 albums. Neil’s drum fills, Alex’s guitar solos, and Geddy’s bass lines and every other piece that makes their incredible compositions. I will never let another day go by where I’m not touched in some way by their creations.
