A strong earthquake, with a reported magnitude between 7.4 and 8.0, struck Panama this afternoon, according to the Institute of Geosciences at the University of Panama. The epicenter was located approximately 39 kilometers west of Tonosí at an estimated shallow depth of between 10 and 33 kilometers.
The earthquake was strongly felt in several Panamanian cities, as well as in neighboring countries such as Colombia and Costa Rica. Initial images show immediate evacuations in schools, offices, and high-rise buildings in Panama's financial district. Witnesses reported that "the windows began to vibrate" and that "people are now leaving their homes in a state of alert."
The alert extends from the north, reaching as far as Alaska, and southward, with particular attention focused on Peru and Chile. The National Tsunami Warning Service and the Chilean Navy reported a state of caution due to unusual waves on Rapa Nui (Easter Island), demonstrating the extent of the phenomenon.
Images broadcast from Panama City show some material damage, although there is still no precise information on casualties or major impacts at the epicenter. Authorities reiterate this.
