Eva is 22 years old and manages 34 YouTube channels for a content company in China.
Her own channel has just 45 subscribers — and today is her last day at work.
In this episode of Inside China Lives, I follow Eva through the final day of a job she has decided to leave without another one lined up.
Her work is unusual: a small team in China creates and operates hundreds of YouTube channels, using AI, editing, data, and a highly repetitive production system to publish content at scale. Eva alone is responsible for 34 channels.
But the more interesting question is not how many channels she manages.
It is why someone who already knows how to make content for other people would walk away from a stable paycheck to start again from almost zero.
We follow Eva from her small rented apartment, into her office as she resigns, and later back to her parents’ small family supermarket. Along the way, she talks about her first jobs, long working hours, money, independence, her family, and why she cares more about building something of her own than simply keeping a job.
Her own YouTube channel currently has only 45 subscribers.
So what happens when someone who has spent every day building channels for other people finally decides to build one for herself?
For channel members, we also went through years of Eva’s old WeChat Moments and talked more about her school years, relationships, work, and the experiences that shaped who she is today.
