Pick playing the fade in on Skateaway was fantastic. I always loved this man's drumming

Dire straits first album is a work of art. So is the second in some way. And the drums play a big part in it. Thank you sir for your contribution to music.

The opening drumming on Water of Love!
Absolute master piece!
👍🇦🇺

His drumming on Telegraph Road, especially over the last few minutes, is fantastic. I have no idea how many times I would replay that and play "air" drums!

Pick Withers is the benchmark of musically aware drumming. Pick was not just a hero of mine but a template of how to play the drums in a band. What a great drummer and what a brilliant name

"Skateaway" from "Making Movies" is my favorite drumming Pick ever did with Dire Straits.

Pick sounds phenomenal on those first couple of Dire Straits records. Really classy player 👏

Dire Straits is one of my 2 favorite bands ever. Mark Knopfler is a great poet and guitar player. It's sad that they fell apart.

Pick’s drumming is fantastic - subtle, tasteful, full of feel. Personally, my favourite track he plays drums on is on Gerry Rafferty’s Cat And Mouse from his excellent Sleepwalking album.

The OG line up of Dire Straits on those first few albums is fantastic.

Pick was a fantastic drummer. His playing on the Straits debut is superb.

I saw Dire Straits in their early days. Pick was with them (on a rather high and separate stage bit of his own).
He seemed a very skilled and confident ’group’ player. There was little or no extraneous drumming that night. All he did was perfectly in keeping with the music.
They played at a perfect (quietish) volume back then.

The Dire Straits recordings with the original line up are priceless. Terry Williams was good at stadium shows but Pick's drumming is so subtle, accurate and communicative.

Ironically, Mark Knopler played a huge part on Dylan's ' Infidels'

Loved his work with Dire Straits. Let’s face it, it quit being a band after Withers left. Maybe even before that. It was Mark’s show. Like Fogerty, his talent was the guiding force. It’s a shame, but that’s how it goes. Knopfler took the Straits as far it would go, then walked away. Thank goodness he never reunited. It just wouldn’t have been the same.

If I had a dollar for every time I've listened to Pick's drumming on "Six Blade Knife", I'd be a rich man. :)    He was the pacemaker for that early DS sound (first two albums). He's right that the sound changed after "Communiqué".. the new sound was great, too... but it didn't have that raw, stripped down feel of the first two albums. Thanks for the interview. Love your work, Pick!

Always good to hear from Pick! One of my favorites.

Pick played on early Michael Chapman LPs in the early 70s.   Heavy Brit folk rock, totally worth checking out! R.I.P.  M.C.!

fantastic drummer

Dire Straits came out when I was 10 years old. I remember secretly staying up until my parents went to bed and then I would turn on the radio and listen with my ear close to the speaker. One night the DJ announced a new band from GB and then played Sultans Of Swing. I had been listening to my father's records from Jazz to Jimi but this sound simply blew me away, and the drums are an important part of it.
