This software makes the Nikon a more versatile option using both mirrorless and cinematic hardware.

Great video Matt! Love your reasonable take on ZR and industry. Thanks!

As always, great analysis Matt. I suspect & speculate too the 2.0 firmware could have nice exposure tools like FalseColor and other goodies from Red. Fingers crossed 🤞🏻

I totally agree with you. As a hobbyist with professional needs, for me ZR is a perfect tool (and at what price!). I shoot only RAW.

Thanks for the summary Matt! Nice work. Like the new matching Nikon glasses ;)

You're 100% correct....it's amazing that there have been so many negative comments for a camera that provides so much...and for so little!

Always good to see more firmware improvements! Well done Matt !

The truth is, these Nikon knockers as I have said before are simply Click-Bait YouTube SCAMMERS! Just block them Matt, ... I do! They don't deserve your kindness!

@Irvingdejong 3 weeks ago

They often boost NR for higher dynamic range scores. The ZR engineer just fell asleep on the YOLO button.

Outstanding as always Matt! I love y ZR so much, I just added a second one for my corporate work. These [anticipated until they are downloadable] F/W upgrades sealed the deal for me. If they proove to be everything we expect, I'll add a third body next spring and sell all my other "junk" off. Check MPB for some sweet deals...

Cheers, Matt. Nikon does seem to be hinting there's more to 2.0 than they told of in the announcement. Can't wait to see what it brings.

The update should be come this October but I don’t know which day

@HerrSpuzzmacher 2 weeks ago

I’m in the United States, we are far from super well. However, this Zr update makes that camera very enticing.

@martzallmedia 3 weeks ago

Honestly would be nice to get the recall function option to map to a button. I used that on my z6iii and z8 to turn off and on subject detection with just one button instead of digging in the menus.

Does anybody have shadow posterization problem with the pictures taken by ZR? All of my pictures (RAW) have this issue. Some look better in the computer but in ZR 's monitor the pictures are terrible.

@familygonzcartwright 3 weeks ago

I don't think people have asked for increased frame rates. Just normal frame rates like true 24 fps not just 23.976 fps. That type of xx.976 fps are frame rates that come from analog video so they make zero sense nowadays if not paired with true frame rates

I wonder what the use-case scenarios are for H:265 with the new R3D log Vs. using the full R3D codec. Where does it make a difference and where not?

If you are recording say, a band in a club with lights and costumes and major differences in light levels within the scene, would the H:265 work as well?

For talking heads in a well lit environment, the H:265 would probably save a lot of storage? How much I wonder per minute.

@johnathondClarke 3 weeks ago

Nikon has finally addressed the issue. Honestly, I don’t know why it took them this long. They could’ve at least acknowledged it earlier. I understand that actually fixing something like this might take time, and maybe even they didn’t know how long it would take.

But like you said, they clearly changed something in the processing pipeline for the ZR that resulted in the softening. It doesn’t really seem like a bug—it feels more like a design decision they made, probably assuming users wouldn’t mind. Clearly, that backfired, because pretty much every review pointed it out.

Hopefully, this is something Nikon takes seriously going forward. For future cameras with EXPEED 8, they really need to offer a proper N-Log2 4:2:2 codec with good bitrates.

@braedenkeyes 3 weeks ago

20:24 - Yes, but then the frustration continues when you have to deal with the lack of focus peaking when using R3D Raw.

I love the ZR, but I do not understand how you can defend that nlog h.265 codec. It’s severely flawed
