In December 1978, Chile and Argentina were hours away from a war that could have forever changed the history of South America.
Argentina had prepared Operation Sovereignty, a military plan aimed at occupying the Picton, Nueva, and Lennox islands and igniting a conflict that could extend far beyond the Beagle Channel.
But there was a problem.
Chile was waiting for them.
In this video, we reconstruct what each side had prepared, how the Argentine offensive was planned to unfold, and what the Chilean plan was to resist it: troops deployed in the far south, defense in depth, units ready for combat, and two squadrons approaching an air and naval confrontation that could begin at any moment.
We analyze Operation Sovereignty, Neighbor Hypothesis 3 (HV3), the continental front, the defense of the southern islands, the role of the Marines, and the deployment of the Chilean Fleet during the most tense hours of the Beagle Crisis.
But one question remains:
If both countries were prepared to fight, what ultimately prevented war from breaking out?
