The writer, journalist, and lawyer, Eduardo Labarca, recalled the day Salvador Allende became President of Chile, when he had to write the main story for El Siglo: “The reporters from the front lines came, they all handed over their things and told me, ‘Now for the front page.’ I had to write the front-page story, which came out with the headline ‘The People Celebrated the Triumph in the Streets.’”

He also recounted his close relationship with Allende, since his father had helped him with his speeches: “He would come to the house and I would call him ‘uncle.’ I know how he walked, how he breathed, how he moved. People often say he was short, but he wasn’t short, he was about 1.78 meters tall, there and there. But, because he had done a lot of swimming and boxing, he had broad shoulders and a thick neck.” Furthermore, he spoke like an Argentinian.
