Today’s case is People of Michigan v. Tanea Tubbs. On June 8, 2024, four Detroit police officers encountered a truck without a license plate at a gas station. Instead of simply approaching the vehicle and investigating, the officers began searching it and preparing to have it towed.
When Tanea Tubbs came outside and saw four officers going through her truck, she confronted them and became visibly upset. She raised her voice and challenged what they were doing. The officers eventually put her on the ground and arrested her.
Tubbs was charged with disobeying a lawful order and disorderly conduct, along with citations related to the vehicle’s missing plate, a suspended license, and lack of insurance.
But Judge Ramsey-Heath went back to the body-camera footage and examined the allegations one by one. Was there actually a lawful order for Tubbs to disobey? Did her words and conduct establish disorderly conduct? And did the officers have enough legal grounds for the actions they took?
As the judge worked through the evidence, the prosecution’s case began to fall apart, and the charges were ultimately dismissed.
