It's kind of a national dish were i'm from. For a cabbage this size i use 4 or 5 apples, depending on the size, + a couple of onions. That's how i learned it from my mother.

Made this on friday night after a 12 hour shift and it did not disappoint..... delighted to have your basis to follow, I added 12 cloves and 1 garlic clove while cooking and a generous knob of real butter.....DELICIOUS!!

A favorite in my house that I don't think to make often enough!  Leftover is good, cold, on a turkey sandwich.

I was taught by my German mother to, slice the cabbage as thinly as possible,  same as his in quarters, put in saucepan,  add 1 or 2 apples peeled and cored, a couple of bay leaves, salt, pepper, sugar, malt vinegar and water. Bring to the boil and simmer slowly for a long time. Pretty much until it's syrupy, always tastes better the following day. Traditionally it's eaten with duck in Germany which is a fatty meat so it cuts through the fattiness, though I like it with any meat. Not too much prep and delicious.  If you don't want red hands, wear gloves. Also, instead of apple, you can use berries. I'd use tart ones like black or red currants. Freezes well.

Use any unused cabbage to make red sauerkraut - only needs a little salt and a bit of pounding and squeezing. Delicious and so nutritious.
