The song Shopper is actually an continuation of the story IU started with her song Holssi. Again context is everything when trying to understand IU Song's. W/o going into great detail, she had considered retiring from singing after her 2022 Golden Hour Concert. There were several reasons she considered it, but after the reception she got at the Golden Hour Concert, where she became the 1st female performer to headline a concert at the Olympic Stadium in Seoul, she decided to do something that Kpop soloist NEVER DO. and that is to break into the Western music concerts. The only kpop soloist to have held concerts in the US have been members of big groups, like BTS and BlackPink, where certain certain individuals have gain a following in the West based of their groups popularity. And virtually all of them spoken English very fluently.
So Holssi was her Declaration that she was going to see how high she can go. Holssi meaning Dandylion seed. Her MV's for Holsdi and Shopper were both filmed in the US which gave everyone a clue as to what she is aiming for. Where Holssi is her Declaration to see how far she can go, Shopper is her statement to her fans to be all they can be. Context here requires a little undersranding of Korean culture. In Korean society the word greed is commonly used to mean that someone is using their ambition, talents, skills and dreams to achieve too much. People are often encouraged to settle for less than they are capable of. IU is challenging those ideas. In Shopper she is encouraging everyone to be all they can be. Enough is never enough, meaning if you can do better do better. She also talks about Victory, which means to set your sites on your goal and go for it. That therebis no plan B so success is the only option.
IU songs are rarely simply about what they seem to beat first glance. IU MV's are helpful in this regard as IU uses her MV's to add depth and meaning to the story she is telling. That said her MV's can be a challenge to decode especially if you don't know any of the background. Everything in an IU MV has meaning and is there for a specific purpose, which makes decoding her songs within the MV and real study in lyric writing and composition.
So the comment about Shopper being odd or strange etc is understandable because you haven't watched the MV or know of any of the other background information about the song.
The light sticks are a kpop thing. Each group/soloist have their own.
Love Wins All needs the context of the MV. At the end of the song it was a wedding dress. The red is from the ending of the of the MV where IU and V are taken by invading Cubes and all that is left is their clothing. The Cube turns red as it destroys them.
Shh.. is about mother daughter relationships. The pictures are generations of Korean female singers.
I saw her in Atlanta. All of her 6 concerts in the US were sold out in 15 minutes. There is no one like her.
Other facts about IU
1- she debuted at 15 in 2008
2-she started to audition at 13 and was rejected 20 times b4 being signed and debuted in 10 months. Most other KPOP acts train for years before debuting.
3- she has more #1 hits songs than any other group or soloist by a factor of 3 (currently 35).
4- in January of 2023 Rolling Stone Mag added her to their list of the 200 Greatest Singers of All Time.
