Why You Keep Overthinking What You Can't Solve — The Poisoned Arrow, Read Until You Sleep

Some questions become louder at night. Why did this happen? What if things go wrong? What should I have done differently? How can I finally understand something that may never have a perfect answer?

Tonight, we explore one of the Buddha’s most memorable teachings: the parable of the poisoned arrow, found in the Cūḷamālukya Sutta

In the discourse, the monk Māluṅkyaputta presses the Buddha for answers to a series of speculative questions. The Buddha responds with the image of a man struck by a poisoned arrow.

Imagine that the wounded man refuses treatment until he knows who shot the arrow, where the person came from, what kind of bow was used, and numerous other details. Before all those questions could be answered, the man would die.

The teaching is not that questions are always useless. Rather, the story draws attention to the difference between questions that help end suffering and speculation that keeps us trapped while the immediate problem remains unattended.

For tonight, the poisoned arrow becomes a gentle reminder: not everything needs to be solved before you can rest.

You do not need every answer tonight.

You do not need to understand everything that happened.

You do not need to predict every possibility waiting tomorrow.

Notice the questions your mind keeps returning to. Instead of fighting them or following each one to its conclusion, allow them to remain unanswered for now.

Let the body become heavy. Let your breathing slow naturally. Let tomorrow hold the questions that belong to tomorrow.

For this moment, nothing needs to be solved.

May your mind loosen its grip on uncertainty, may your body settle into stillness, and may you drift gently into deep and peaceful sleep.
