One thing I learned early on was the more expensive supplies didn’t improve my art work. I did go a little mad with purchases when I started painting and soon realised that the cheaper items were more fun to use and experiment with. I was a bit precious about the more expensive items and was wary of”wasting” them.

Excellent video, it’s refreshing to see someone recommending and highlighting budget friendly art supplies. Thank you for all the time and work that you put into your videos.

Watercolor paper is expensive but there is a huge difference between cotton and cellulose.

Wanted to share a tip that I use. To get dried acrylic out of a paint brush I soak it in hand sanitizer. Works like charm!

A 9x12 pad of Arches is $19.89 at Blick. It’s only 12 sheets but you can cut it down if you want to make smaller pieces. Arches comes out to $1.65/sheet vs Meeden is $1.64/sheet for 9x12. I’d argue the Arches is worth the extra penny per page :)

I do love seeing the sketch transform like magic. Thank for sharing the "On the Budget". My mind has just fully began understanding to learn with the budget the finer skills so as not to feel like I'm wasting my expensive art supplies with harsh mistakes, when I can afford buying for finished artwork. Your journey ups and downs are helping so much more than you can conceive, thank you so very much 🤗❤️👍🏽💯

I always expect something magical from the expensive supplies, I remember dreaming about DS watercolours…but it’s also a huge joy to dream and just buy one tube by one 🥰 from time to time

The one thing the tariffs have affected are art supplies especially watercolor paper. I can’t believe how high paper has gone up. It’s a shame, too, as artists aren’t the ones who usually have extra to spend on the whole. There is no reason to think prices will go down. No matter how you feel politically, it still stinks when you can’t afford your hobby or your the tools of your profession.

I love the Meeden Gouache set. I bought another 'starter' set months ago and did not enjoy the experience. I was sad because I love the look of gouache. I enrolled in a class and then purchased the Meeden set, what a difference! I love the set and love gouache now. I'm interested to try out their watercolor paper once my current supply is out. Thanks for sharing these!

Totally agree with you on Michaels prices. Here in California, their prices are so high, compared to everyone else, even my local art supply store.

This was fun to see what you chose. I appreciate the encouragement to buy supplies that will help you create fine art, not get in the way, but don’t break the bank!

I still use my Cotman watercolour paints more than the expensive professional ones I have

@catherinefreese9310 1 year ago

Great video Amy, thank you so much. Another low cost option for watercolour paints and pencil crayons is used. I have both bought, and sold items on local sites and places like eBay. Even sketchbooks and paintbrushes. I wouldn’t risk purchasing older watercolour paper, but otherwise, some great items if you do a little investigation.

I'm always on a hunt for new brushes and fixatives. And I did not know that working fixatives is a thing. Good to know! Thanks! I just found out that Meeden ships to my country!

For years, my most expensive art supplies were a small tin of Polychromos that I got for a birthday. I still treasure it to this day.

I love that Meeden Gouache set! Also the huge Canson XL watercolor paper. So good for mixed media. I got mine on a Blick 2 for 1, which made each 18 x 22 pad $18!Just FYI anyone, look for the sales! Great video Amy
