I wholeheartedly support hospitality employees getting as many upgrades as they can. What you all have to put up with deserves every perk because I'm sure the pay doesn't fully cover everything you have to put up with.

I feel so sorry for American employees at various establishments for not being allowed to sit while they work customer-facing desk jobs. Where I live in Europe, the vast majority of them don't just get to sit, but they get special chairs for it to ensure they will not have health issues. The only ones who don't sit are the ones by fast food places and smaller shops who need to move around all the time anyway.
I feel utterly blessed every time the ladies at the local bookshop ask me to come behind the desk to look at the screen when i order specific books, so I get the right one.

"GOD! Why do I NEVER get a complimentary upgrade?? I only told the front desk agent she's a thief and I hate her!"

For the object permanence thing, those of us with ADHD struggle with it, but that is ridiculous. It's not usually that bad.

I am 71 and darn it, my name is Karen. However, I have lived with the thought that I treat others how I want to be treated. With a positive attitude, kindness and respect. It's not hard!

Calling her "bonus mum" instead of "step mum" is so sweet! ❤

I’ve noticed I’ve been getting a lot of freebies when I go out, and I think it’s because I make an active effort to be a pleasant customer. I don’t do it for the freebies, but sometimes it really does pay to be nice.

My mom is kind of a Karen, and she seemed extremely surprised that it almost always seems to lead to a better experience when I’m the primary person interacting with employees. Who would’ve thunk that people are more willing to help you when you treat them like people worthy of respect.

12:11 German here in case someone needs more info:
Medication not available at hotels: Everything medical stronger than skin creams and a bit of melatonin is only sold through pharmacies. Including pain medication. Without a prescription, you can get Ibuprofen (advil), paracetamol or ass.

Emergency pharmacy: At night, stores are closed and you'll need to go to the designated emergency pharmacy in your area (they rotate according to a public list available online or at any pharmacy), which can be far away and they'll charge you a 2,50€ fee per visit.

Sunday closure: On Sundays and public holidays, almost everything has to be closed to allow the employees a mandatory day of rest. However, hospitality, emergency services, transportation and some other things are exempt. A pharmacy in a train station is uncommon, but not illegal and would be exempt from the Sunday closure law as it would be considered part of the train station.

I work retail. Quite often we’ll have customers say website that’s not ours, says we have this product or that service. I’ve developed this saying: “fake news, it’s not just in politics us retailers have been dealing with it forever.”

Not related to hotels but I HATE open concept desks in pretty much every environment they are implemented. They often double as a workstation for other tasks that are not customer facing so it "seems" like they have tons of staff but actually they only have a single person. It makes the customer experience worse and probably gets a whole bunch of jerks getting rude. A simple desk as explained in the video makes it very clear who is assisting customers and who is doing other tasks.

Ever since Covid I've noticed a lack of manners and civility in people. That also co-coincides with a rise in social media platforms like Twitter and Tiktok.

My mom always taught me that you get more flies with honey than vinegar. Most of the time, the person you're talking to has nothing to do with why you're upset. Your best bet is to be nice and realize this and also if you're polite and nice, you may find that the person dealing with you will be more on your side and may be able to help you in a different way. It's not rocket science and if you've ever worked in customer service you'd already know this.

I made the decision a few months ago to say something “extra nice” to anyone who checks me in to a hotel, rings up my groceries, any other service. I usually say something like, “I hope you have a really good day today” (instead of the cursory “Have good one”) while looking them straight in the eye and smiling. Some say, “Thanks. You too”, and some say with emotion, “Thank you so much for that.” with sad eyes. It hurts me that they are aching for that bit of kindness, but happy I could help in a very small way. Everyone has a struggle.

My moto for a long time " just ask if they say no that's fine ".

I have also noticed the reactions from employees when I’m simply being polite and respectful. Recently I have noticed it when I’m talking with customer service on the telephone. The obvious relief in their voice when they realise that you’re talking kindly and being patient is audible. 😊

that comment that these employees are just so grateful when you're a bit polite is so true because when i was trying to buy my laptop, i got in touch with one of the customer care member and she was so nice to me and our conversation was very pleasant throughout and at the end she was like thanking me for being so wonderful over the chat and i was genuinely like oh god what are people even saying on chats that just being polite is making these employees be so thankful

I am a worker at Ikea, and it always stuns me how scared people are to even ask me for stuff, apologizing for "disturbing me" while I tidy up the department. Sometimes I even get told how rude and disrespectful some coworkers seemed to have been to customers who were honestly really sweet to me. Makes me even nicer towards people who are genuinely afraid to annoy the workers paid to help them

5:19 This goes with teachers too. I follow up with my kid's teachers to make sure that if they're bad that day, we follow up at home and I'm constantly thanked. Has been since my oldest started kindergarten. I find it so sad they have to be so thankful to a parent for following up.

As someone who does work in retail (in a grocery store specifically), I think the reason why we act so strongly to people being nice is because most of the time we're dealing with people who are upset with the price of everything going up (fair), but then act like we're the ones personally making the price changes. Then you get the Karens, or the people who think they're being sneaky/smart who start arguing with you about every little price who don't actually read the tags, just assume that a price near an object is that price (no, the price for the Monster energy drinks is not the same as the price for the 12 pack cokes) and then demand that we "honor" the price anyway. Every single day. Multiple times a day. Just having one person not come at us like we're personally responsible for everything is just. So refreshing 😭
