With James Cameron's AVATAR: Fire and Ash winning a Best Visual FX Oscar at this year's Academy Awards + AVATAR: Fire and Ash grossing OVER A BILLION DOLLARS, TAaron returns to give their AVATAR: The Way of Water reaction, recap, analysis, breakdown, & spoiler review!

Aaron Alexander & Tara Erickson react to and review Avatar: The Way of Water (2022), the visually groundbreaking sci-fi epic directed by James Cameron (Titanic, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Avatar). Set over a decade after the original film, this sequel expands the world of Pandora with a focus on family, survival, and the deep connection between the Na’vi and their environment.

Sam Worthington (Clash of the Titans, Hacksaw Ridge) returns as Jake Sully, now fully living as a Na’vi and raising a family with Neytiri, played by Zoe Saldaña (Guardians of the Galaxy, Star Trek). When a new human threat arrives—led once again by the resurrected Colonel Quaritch (Stephen Lang — Don’t Breathe, Public Enemies)—Jake is forced to relocate his family to the oceanic regions of Pandora, where they seek refuge with the reef-dwelling Metkayina clan, led by Tonowari (Cliff Curtis — Fear the Walking Dead, Training Day) and Ronal (Kate Winslet — Titanic, Mare of Easttown).
The film is packed with breathtaking sequences, including the immersive underwater exploration of Pandora’s oceans, high-speed aquatic chases, and the emotional bond between the Na’vi and the tulkun creatures. Standout moments include the Sully family learning the ways of the water, the intense final battle aboard the sinking sea vessel, and the film’s powerful themes of family unity and protecting one’s home at all costs.
Blending cutting-edge visual effects with emotional storytelling, Avatar: The Way of Water delivers a cinematic spectacle that pushes the boundaries of filmmaking while continuing the saga of Pandora and the Sully family.

I often use this movie as an example of how you can tell when directors genuinely love their creations rather than it just being a cash grab. Dude waited over a decade for the technology to catch up so he could properly tell the story he wanted to tell.

It won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects and it made $2.3 billion dollars against a $460 million dollar budget.

The most impressive part about this movie is that there are literally no sets. It's an empty sound stage with mo-cap and props! Aside from the incredibly cool dive pool that was created specifically to mimic the ocean, there are no actual sets. The CGI is extraordinary, but the actors bringing it to life are next level in my book.

The water physics and visuals looks so otherworldly and surreal. I can see why James Cameron waited so long to make sure the technology was up to it.

I’d happily spend 3 hours watching a ‘documentary’ about the wilderness and wildlife of Pandora

I do not consider myself a violent person but watching the arm flying in 3D was glorious 😂

Avatar: Fire and Ash was just announced to be digitally released on March 31st!

I love how one of the most compelling characters in the story with a powerful, personal story arc is...an alien whale.

I feel the Tulkun are an intentional address to criticisms about the Na'vi being too humanoid. James Cameron was probably like, "hey, non-humanoid sapient aliens can tell an emotional story too!" I'd say he did quite well.

I grieve Neteyam every damn time...

To prepare for the role of Ronal, Kate Winslet underwent intensive free-diving training to master the "static apnea" technique. She remarkably surpassed Tom Cruise’s record of six minutes, which he set during the filming of *Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation*.
The production utilized a massive 340.000 gallon tank equipped with performance capture technology, requiring the actors to remain submerged without SCUBA gear to avoid bubbles interfering with the sensors. Winslet famously celebrated her 7 minute and 14 second feat by immediately surfacing and asking, "Am I dead?"

It was the best-looking film ever... until the sequel came out. Fire and Ash is even more visually stunning somehow

1:19:35 Jake lost his twin brother Tommy. Now Lo'ak's lost Neteyem. Jake's always known that Lo'ak is like him - neither of them was ever 'the good one' or 'the smart one'.

@kexmi8706 6 months ago

It's annoying watching people pretend they would act any different in these situations.

@MikeJoyceN7 6 months ago

I’m glad they brought Quaritch back. Stephen Lang is so good in the role

The moment before Netayem dies is devastating because it's one of the moments that reminds the audience that they're just kids- sometimes you forget because of how old they appear as Navi, except for Tuk because she's so small. But Netayem died at fifteen. Lo'ak is fourteen- Jake is a marine stuck in a war and he directs them like soldiers, but they're kids. His son's last words asking to go home and being "dad, i-" is devastating. He wasn't even a teenager.
