Muammar Gaddafi was pulled out of a drainage pipe outside Sirte in October 2011 and killed
by the fighters who found him. He was buried in an unmarked grave in the desert so that it
could never become a shrine. He left eight biological children.
This is what happened to the family of Muammar Gaddafi afterwards.
Three sons killed within seven months of each other in 2011. A fourth shot dead in his own
garden in February this year, ten weeks before an election he had registered to contest.
The son who played one match in Italian football and served seven years in a Tripoli prison,
three of them after being acquitted. The son whose two-day arrest in Geneva once forced the
president of Switzerland to apologise to Libya, and who later spent ten years in a Beirut
cell without trial. The daughter who sat on Saddam Hussein's defence team and could not get
a European prosecutor to open a file on the death of her own child. And the daughter the
regime told the world had been killed by American bombs in 1986, who appears to have grown
up and become a doctor.
Sixty billion dollars was frozen when Muammar Gaddafi fell. Eleven billion euros of it has
never been publicly accounted for. This is where the money went, and where the family went.
