Why I Avoided the Corporate Career Path (How to Make a Living Outside the 9-to-5)

If you are looking for career change advice or wondering how to escape the 9-to-5, the traditional corporate career path is no longer the reliable formula for success we were promised. Since corporations are laying off people en masse, it begs the question: how do we all move forward? How are people going to make a decent living without climbing the corporate ladder?

In this video, I’m sharing the exact moment I decided to step off the corporate treadmill and the defining experience that set me on a completely different path early on. Conventional career advice from Boomers and the Silent Generation very rarely applies to the modern workplace and landscape.

If you've ever felt trapped by a corporate career or wondered if there’s a better way to build your life, then my experience may resonate. What's your take on the traditional corporate path?

— About the Channel —

J. Wilder Unfiltered explores the hidden patterns shaping our world and how we live through history, geopolitics, macroeconomics, monetary systems, societal structures, sovereignty, decentralization and unconventional living.

Rather than simply reporting the news, this channel examines the mechanisms behind the headlines—connecting events through historical, economic, and interdisciplinary analysis to better understand how these systems work, how they affect our lives and how to navigate them more independently.

The goal is not only to understand the world, but to use that understanding to live unconventionally, recognize the flaws and incentives built into standard systems, avoid getting caught in the crosshairs and, where possible, build or choose alternatives.

Subscribe for raw, independent breakdowns that connect the dots across worldwide systems.

I went up to the top, best law school in the country, then worked for a member of the parliament. I saw how politicians stole and did business without consequences. Then I refused working for a top tier international law firm, for Monsanto, for Pepsi, for Glaxo Welcome. I just couldnt do it. Ironically enough I finished working in badly paid, ground level jobs which allowed me to have an anonimous bohemian life style. At 50+, I am a small farmer in a forgotten spot now.

It's incredible the amount of torment most people put themselves through because they're too afraid to explore different ways of living, usually to make other people happy.

There are no perfect jobs, no perfect countries, no perfect partners. There’s only what you create for yourself.

I am almost 50 and realize that each job makes those golden handcuffs harder to take off.

i am 29. i rent a room above a restaurant i work. they charge me very little to live in a shoebox. i make paintings i dont sell and dream of making a lil shop to sell art and stickers. in due time.

according to society i’m a dishwasher, but i feel i’m working on finding myself. finding out for me how it feels to be human, how to make peace w it. i feel things so extremely. i’m grateful for your measured approach, i get caught up in justification and rationalization a lot.

I don't want a career, I want a job I like, freedom, traveling, more nature instead of an office. Nature!

42 here. Changed 20 jobs since 2001. Every time I accepted new job i started getting sick mentally and physically. I always felt something wrong with it, like it's going against myself, my soul. There are people out there that will tell you "you're just lazy". Well, you know what is lazy, doing same boring job you hate (but you can't admit it to yourself) for 45-50 years. I wish all you people well. Hope you find something you love/care about that can produce some income. Or just go and be like Diogenes, or some other kind of hermit. Whatever suits you. Don't listen to others. No one knows what it is to be you.

I always learned that you just need to do something. Don’t look for a perfect job or career, it doesn’t exist.

Being abused and neglected by my parents led me to tie in external achievements with my worth, and I have almost unalived myself several times because I "failed" to live up to my own expectations and the expectations of my parents and the culture and society I live in. It's pretty sickening because the majority of the most "successful" people I've met were horrible human beings with zero morals. Didn't make sense to me. We should value kindness, empathy, compassion and integrity more.

Hated every job I've ever had. I would rather die young in the wilderness than live to be 80 in this place. I'm done

I'm 32. Have worked in retail, hospitality, viticulture, mechanics, landscaping, building, installing kitchens, boat cleaning, painting, and recently got an architecture degree and worked as a graduate during my countries worst job economic period in recent history. I have not enjoyed working full-time in any of my roles for money. I have no desire to fit the mould, I will never get a mortgage, I never want debt, I don't want a new car, I don't want consumer products. What I have recently realized is I WANT good relationships, I want a life full of experiences such as exploring, learning, experiencing cultures, music, and hobbies such as photography, fishing, and gardening. I'm coming to realize I am VERY lucky to have such desires, I can fulfill my goals quite easily only working part-time, growing and cooking my own food, learning to do my own repairs. It's taken me 15 years of self shame to finally be okay with my own path.. I wish we still lived in the pre-internet age where we didn't feel the need to compare ourselves with everyone all the time. Thank you for your video, and cheers to all the beauty in the simple things

I hate work, I hate the grind. When I was studying, I wanted to have this big job and make 6 figures and climb the corporate ladder, but now that I am working and have realised that the corporate life kills the soul and happiness, the only thing I want is to get out of it. I’m sick of sitting in a stuffy office for 9 hours a day doing computer work that I hate. I was unemployed for 6 months before my current job and I was very stressed and scared of how I was going to make money again, but now that I’m back at work, I’m realising how destructive it is to the soul. I spend my days dreaming of owning a farm and growing my own food, and living a slow and calm life and taking care of my future children. Society lied to us, especially us women. The dream is not to work your life away climbing a corporate ladder. The dream is to be with the people you love and have freedom to pursue your passions. RIP to my free spirited soul that I left at the door of my work

In my book, you are a TRUE success. The day you turned down that marketing job, you put yourself clearly on the path of honoring your soul.

I dropped out of college after one year. Moved to CA from the midwest. Worked odd jobs through my 20's ( it was the 90s, and life wasn't so off the charts expensive). I went to masssge school just out of curiosity and found I really enjoyed the work. I've never thought of it as a job. More something creative and helpful that I do that supports me. Always a renter. No car for many years. Now drive an old Toyota. No debt. Life is peaceful🌿💚✨️
