Congrats to The Thing for being inducted into the National Film Registry this week! So well-deserved!!!!!

Not all questions are answered, and that’s why it’s a classic

The dog was actually a hyrid, a mix of both wolf and dog. His name was Jed.

So you're both right at the beginning! The dog actor was half wolf. They said it's why he could do those scenes of stillness and stare so well (try getting a husky to be still for thirty seconds lol).

One of my most underrated favourite things about this movie is how DISTINCT and INTERESTING every character is. You can identify them by appearance and personality and yet you have NO background or backstory for any of them. They're like cartoon characters, in a good way, because you only need 1 action or line to distinguish them from the rest. It's genius character work. You see Kurt Russell dump a whisky in a computer and put on a cowboy hat and you know who he is. You see the gentle looking old man Garry shooting a gun like a marksman and you're suddenly paying attention. You see Clark comforting the dog and you know what he cares about.

Commenting before "the dog scene"
You poor boys arent ready

"we had better see the thing"

Oh boy... 🤣🤣🤣

OMG, you're watching my favorite movie!! PERFECT!!

Before I watched this movie with my husband, I talked his ear off about how excited I was to see the practical horror effects...y'all!! I. Was. Not. Ready. 😨😱🤢 Lmao

My all time favorite movie. I’ll never not get goosebumps at the scene where Bennings opens his mouth and that creepy a$$ alien scream comes out.

If you guys want more “the world in danger” sci-fi horror, watch The Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978). Such a creepy ass movie. It’s “somewhat” underrated, especially when it comes to 1970’s horror. The 70’s was a great horror decade and people sometimes forget about ‘Body Snatchers.’

The more you watch, the more layers reveal themselves
1. Blair wasn't a thing when he destroyed the equipment. He was trying to prevent the thing from getting out. He knew it would come for him, so he built a noose to kill himself before that happened. He failed, and we still see the noose post transformation.

2. We know that Palmer was a thing when he alerted Mac to the spider head thing. So things will help kill other things, even put on a show, to make not-things lower their defenses and trust them. That means the "test" might have been a ruse by potentially thing Mac, and the final showdown was probably the things' plan whether Mac was a thing or not. It reduced the survivors to one.

3. There's a debate over whether Childs or Mac was the thing at the end. It doesn't matter. Either way, the thing wins, planet Earth is fucked, the things will move on to the next planets with humanity added to their biological palette. There is no winning against things, they are too ancient, powerful, and difficult to filter and kill.

As an aside, there's a fascinating  little novella telling this story from the thing's perspective called "The Things". A really interesting look into the mind of something truly alien and incomprehensible. There's free audiobooks of it all over YouTube.

"How's Your Head!!!!" 24:00 😂

This is my official "go to" movie whenever the winter weather gets particularly nasty.  I just watched it again about 10 days ago when the temperature was down in the mid -30s.

I think they filmed on location around Salmon Glacier near Stuart British Columbia Canada. I love how this movie makes the location itself a character.

This is just so obviously the greatest horror movie ever made. I’m happy to see you two watching it.

“Does the dog die?” Well, yes!!
