I used to try to hold my breath every time while traveling through the Massey Tunnel.

The strange phenomenon where people have to slow down to <50km/h while going through the tunnel isn't mentioned, but is most definitely a factor in why traffic is perpetually clogged up in the tunnel. People seem to get scared because its only possible to see the other side when you're halfway through.

My uncle was a truck driver for Progressive Contracting.  He drove one of the first big rigs through it and was immediately pulled over on the Delta side upon exiting. It seems, when they measured the height clearance, they forgot to include the lights that hung down... OOPS😮 He inadvertently took out EVERY single one, oblivious from the sound of the truck engine. After that, they installed lights in the top corners where the walls met the ceiling, solving the problem.

Through these history videos, you can clearly tell different efficiencies and efficacies of government today vs government 50 years and even 100 years ago.

At 2:40, the map describing the new ferry landings of 1931 shows the dredged basin just upstream of Woodwards landing.  This basin was actually built decades later as part of the Massey tunnel segment precast operation!   Today this basin is the  B.C. Ferries Fleet Maintenance Unit and is used to refit & repair ferries.

What are the odds I find this right as I'm writing my own video on the Fraser River Tunnel Project! Great work man!

New tunnel capacity might be able to remain adequate, if Transit on the south side of the river were invested in significantly.  Currently it's only good at getting into Vancouver.

That new tunnel should be trolled until it’s paid off

The official video of the Massey Tunnel construction had zero footage of the ferries that came before. This video rectifies that!
Also twice there was mention and footage of ice floes on the river! That was a shock.

I remember the tunnel tolls, and the new tunnel was fascinating to my young eyes. Before the tunnel we'd go all the way from Kits east (before 401) through New West, over Pattullo Bridge and down King George HWY to get to White Rock. Then the tunnel and HWY 99 cut that time down a lot. I still go down to White Rock through the tunnel but on the double decker 351 bus these days, beats the slow car lanes nicely. (I still call the tunnel 'Deas' and everyone is confused.)

So.... Cancel an in progress project that cost 3b...for one that takes longer and cost more....?

I spent 10 years commuting through that tunnel daily from about 2000 to 2010, not to mention the previous 20 years making regular trips north of the Fraser river from South Surrey/White Rock. After 2010 I turned down jobs and work that required commuting north of the Fraser river through the tunnel or over the Alex Fraser or the Patullo Bridge. Funny that back in the day New Westminster fought hard to get the crossing there instead of Deas Island. Be careful what you wish for.

My dad worked on the construction of the tunnel when he first came into country.   With the huge population growth every effort they take  to reduce bottle necking won't work for very long. The did the same things in California, always ended up with the same problem.

Super interesting! Thanks for this, although I disagree it's the tunnel is the "massive bottleneck" it's the population that's created the bottleneck!

Great Job! I used to battle the Tunnel for years and pity those who do it now. The Bridge should have been built by now but the politicians screwed it up, and it remains the same. Very sad...

more info on george massey. he would sit by the ferry landing counting cars on the weekdays after work and weekends getting data for how many cars used the ferry service.he did this till he was able to get the crossing made into the tunnel.i sure remember the tolls .having to stop on the richmond side to pay to go to ladner and back.the grandparents lived in ladner,we had moved from ladner into vancouver.

i knew dot massey thru my grandma who knew her. i was in grade 7 ,working on making a scale model of the tunnel. dot let me use the family's orginal blue prints of the tunnel.not the copies in the bc museum in victoria. it w as so cool,my scale model of the tunnel was unique.the parents helped do the math for the scaling.wish we had taken a pic.yes i got an a for it. the night before the offical grand opening of the tunnel.the adults in ladner,bc went thru it. the teens babysat me-i was 2 at the time.

I love your videos ❤❤❤

Red Bridge In Kamloops video idea? She just burned down actually 😂 great videos 👍

add a tram or a train if ur adding dedicated transit. ik it would b expensive but think of the benefits of connecting the canada line or an ofshoot south of the tunnel for delta. maybe a park n ride/interchange at deas island or smting
