I hope the re-upload doesn't hurt your revenue. I'll rewatch just to make sure you get that adsense

A bridge makes sense in theory, but fails in practice when you consider the aptitude of the average British Columbian driver.

Please consider doing a video on ‘History of BC Tel’.  Your videos showcasing BC remind me of 80’s and 90’s BC tel era before TELUS destroyed it.

This series is fantastic. Thanks for all the effort the makers put into it.

Remember traveling BC Ferries since 1961. It was such an adventure for a 4 year old. Rough weather my mum would be shades of blue, wouldn't let me run around felt so deprived. Still have postcards of vessels from that era. I've watched them grow to what they are today. BC should be proud of them even if they've reached capacity.

I miss the old fries and gravy from the 80s in the cardboard bowels. I always had enough money for that and to play video games.

Irving House in New Westminster is preserved as a heritage home and museum, a great place to visit for a look at Victorian BC.

I grew up in the Port Mann area of North Surrey, and used to play down in the Bon Accord creek ravine. The creek's named after the steamboat dock that used to service the area. I'm pretty sure it's the very same route mentioned in this video, the one from Victoria to Langley.

It was a little eerie down there as a kid. Steep ravine walls, dark, always damp. But most of all, it was littered with all these old ruins. Gigantic cut timbers, feet thick, but long as a house. All old, rotting, collapsing. Strewn about the creekbed in incomprehensible patterns. Giant iron nails like small railroad spikes still imbedded in places. Water would pool up around them as they partially dammed some areas, and in the early summer you could jump off them in a couple places if the water was deep enough. I had no idea what these ruins were, but I assumed they were probably from when my parents were younger. Some sort of industrial operation on the Fraser or something. I was way off. My parents were born in the 50's, and these remains were probably half a century older than that. Turns out they were some kind of water storage system used for refilling the boilers of the steamboats. I was playing around on the rotting remains of an industry from the 19th century. Sometime after 2010 or something the City of Surrey went in there and gentrified the park. It's all gone now. That quiet sanctuary of a lost world replaced with a curated artificial looking walking path and creek bed. I felt the loss pretty profoundly. Maybe it was time for it to go, but it still felt like they'd defiled a grave. As if ripping it all out would disturb the ghosts of that place who'd rested peacefully for 100 years.

I grew up in Tsawwassen and this is the first time I’ve ever heard someone use the pronunciation locals use!

The vessel shown at 5:40 is not a ferry boat, it is a cable ferry, the longest such salt-water crossing in existence, so it is said, serving the Denman Island--Buckley Bay route.  Its proper name is "Baynes Sound Connector" but islanders usually call it "the B.S. Con," "the Drag Queen," and sometimes rude names with fecal connotations during one of its numerous service interruptions, mostly for mechanical issues.  It is seriously under-powered and over-taxed for the task at hand  This route once had a perfectly good vessel, MV Quinitsa (still in service elsewhere).  A decade ago the B.S. Con was pressed upon islanders despite much protest and warnings about the problematic nature of its propulsion system, all in the name of projected significant cost-of-service savings.  The protests were gaslighted in best bureaucratic fashion; the warnings re its inadequacies have largely been realized; the savings have proved imaginary.  BCF at best has been silent or evasive re maintenance costs, cable replacement is more frequent and costly than projected.  It might be said this imbroglio is little brother to the "fast cats" mess in the 90s, certainly it is not BCF's finest hour.  But, so long as it does not fail entirely it will persist as there appears to be no space in BCF's capital plan for a remedy of this own-goal mistake.  I know all this to be true because I live there.

I have been sailing the Ferries for the better part of my life and since I've retired from the Navy in 2007, I seldom sail on them anymore.  Wishing them better luck in the future, they are beautiful ships in a beautiful Province and the most professional employees ever.

Yes we use to travel to the Sunshine Coast on the BlackBall Ferries. On one trip the ferry we were on the “Smokewa” (I think) and it broke down. There was the Smokewa and Bainbridge on the Langdale route so two ferries back and forth. Anyway instead of pulling the broken ferry out of service they strapped a tug to the side of the (Smokewa) ferry and it took us about three hours to go from Horseshoe Bay to Langdale. I can’t remember how many times the Bainbridge passed us in both directions but at least four times while we struggled to get to Langedale. That was probably the early 60’s maybe even 59.  I was also on the Queen of Surrey when it hit the Langdale dock in 2019. First boat of the morning. Brace, brace, brace….then the crash.  I was on an outside upper car deck so I got off in time to drive to Secret cove fix my boat and was on the 6 something pm coming home. It took two big harbour tugs and the ferry in full reverse to get the ferry off the dock it had crashed into. While we waited for the tugs it was free food and drinks for the day and they later sent us some free tickets as a thank you for the inconvenience. Overall I think B.C. ferries has done a pretty good job. I even spent a night in Langdale parking lot once after missing the last ferry. I think it was full. There have been some tragedies but overall pretty safe. I recall one incident when overnight in Langdale wasn’t that uncommon. A woman had fallen asleep and she woke up saw the ferry in the dock and put the car in forward and gunned it towards the ferry. The ferry was docked for the night with the dock ramp part way up off the ferry deck you can guess the rest.

A ferry so nice, you had to ride upload it twice.

I think another potential long term solution is to go for even bigger ferries on the Swartz Bay-Tsawwassen and Nainaimo-Horseshoe Bay routes. The seismic danger from the Cascadian Subduction Zone and the inclement weather between Vancouver and Vancouver Island in the winter months may make the idea of a bridge connection not that viable, not to mention the massive amount of ship traffic to and from the Port of Vancouver becoming a major ship navigation hazard if a bridge between Swartz Bay and Tsawwassen is built (as we saw all too clearly from what happened in Baltimore in 2024).

The first two ferries (Queen of Tsawwassen and the Queen of Sidney) were built in BC from designs based on the MV Coho.   The Coho continues to operate today between Port Angles and Victoria using a ship that is virtually the same as it was back in 1959.   Take a trip on the Coho and experience what those original two BC Ferries were like ;-)

I remember when the run between Nanaimo and Tsawwassen was first introduced.  Duke point wasn’t even designed yet so the two ships used berth 2 while the others from Horseshoe Bay used berth 3 at Departure Bay. It was such a mess getting up the hill when vessels from both routes pulled in at the same time.  I recall locals being upset about the building of duke point but it sure did help congestion.

I always had the dream of riding the Queen of the North some day when I was younger.  Was so sad when she sank.

As far as a bridge is concerned, the one thing I always heard about when it was being planned with the issue surrounding the Fraser River.  The loose sediment from the river was the reason why a bridge is impossible to design, they could never figure out how to get around that issue.

Thanks for the video!! I love your content!!

Sorry you had to re upload this! My wife and I subscribed, it was a terrific video and we are excited to check out the rest!

Beautiful, as always.  Thank you x2 🙌🏼

Thank you so much for making this video!
