I think for a German it is totally odd to name a child "Apple", "Summer", "Moon Unit", "Fifi Trixibelle", "Peaches", "River", "Tiger Lily Heavenly Hirani",...😂
English names which sound strange for Germans: Todd = Tod = death, Matt = Mett = minced meat, Brad = Brett = board or plank, Duncan = danken = to thank, Ross = Ross = horse, Russel = Rassel = rattle, Shaun = schon = already, Morgan = morgen = tomorrow or morning, Clyde = Kleid= dress 😂
When I remember correctly: In Australia a young boy was not accepted at a catholic school as his last name was Hell. The guys there thought they cannot have such an evil name, although his parents came from Germany. As you already told in the video, it means bright light.
I had the opposite experience when I moved to an English-speaking country: I couldn't believe there were young people called Gretchen (with an English pronunciation) and they were not aware that it is such an old-fashioned name in Germany. Also so many women had what I would consider family names as first names, such as Mackenzie or Turner!
Many names common in English-speaking countries sound quite funny to Germans, e.g., Wayne (sounds like the question word 'who' to Germans), Chloe (sounds like "Klo" the German word for Loo)
I'm surprised the name Wolfgang didn't make you think of Mozart! It's still a popular name in Austria. My brother in law is a Wolfgang, his daugher married another (my husband calls him "the new one") and her son has Wolfgang as his middle name.
Most of the names you mention are of Germanic or Low-German descent. The Germanic ones usually have some connection to being at the helm of the battle or something similar (think Vikings)
I can't believe you've never heard of the world famous composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart 😯 It's as if we Germans had never heard of William Shakespeare ;-)
Ther is so much ignorance in this video.... "oh I never thought other countries have different names, because I never heard of them and they sound so funny when I mispronounce them in my language"
