Who Do You Think You Are?

Actor and writer Mark Gatiss has always had a love of storytelling and a passion for the ghastly and ghoulish, but has always wondered where it comes from. So when he discovers that his mother's side of the family goes back five generations to the wilds of Northern Ireland, his imagination is awakened. Mark travels to Ireland, where he untangles a tale of rags to riches and finds out that his family were storytellers and (allegedly) vampire slayers!

His dad is hilarious,” It was the milkman.” “She wasn’t lapsed until she met me.”

“That nose! It’s been following me for centuries!” Oh, I can relate, Mark. I found a photo of my great-great-grandmother Mina online and immediately saw that she had the same-shaped nose as my grandmother, father, and me. Grandma always called it our “potato nose.” I now have photos of both of Grandma’s grandmothers, and, except for the nose, they look remarkably alike. And, I look a lot like both of them! Which really gives me a true sense of connection to them and their families.

His relative is a sweetheart. It would be nice if they could fix up the old homestead.

I cried when Jeremiah bought the land his people were from with the family inheritance.

As an Irishman I feel compeled to say, there was no famine. There was a theft.

I teared up when he said she looked like his mom , I went and looked her up she really does favor his mom, so precious.

What a terrific story! I like Mark Gatiss even more now. Of course I would like him to restore the old family homestead if his relative agrees.

I hope he went back and they let him restore the home. It is still salvageable and to make it whole again, after his family worked so hard to hang on to it, would keep the family home going. I thought, if I had money, and this was my history, I would want to help protect it.

I love this one. As a storyteller myself and having some Irish in my family, this resonates so much with me. And my family was from Northern Ireland, it's amazing what this story had for me. Even vampires, because I write a vampire series and one of my angel-turned-vampire's took the name Sullivan after a man whose family died in the famine. The symbolism, seen through Mark Gatiss's eyes, was amazing to watch. Thanks for doing this one!!

Such a beautiful complex story. Wouldn't it be great if Gatiss could contribute some of his actor/director earnings to restore the old family homestead.

What a fabulous story of the underlying common thread of a family legacy weaving its way even to the unknowing generations.

Mark you should rebuild the family home… what a treasure it is and can be again.

I hope that proposed movie about Ireland that Gatiss suggests making happens!

I watched this twice and I’ve always been a fan of Mark by watching shows I’m American but have strange obsessions about English/Irish and Scottish ancestry in my family. ❤

I'm from a smallish town in central Massachusetts; through my father I'm related to the first Irish Catholic family in that town- their last name was Kelly, they were there from right around the Revolution. They don't exist anymore (daughtered out) Anyway, they were close and/or related to Kanes in the same town.
I'm choosing to believe this is my brush with greatness ty ty
