In today's explore, we attempt to infiltrate the infamous abandoned HMP Reading, one of the UK's most historic and heavily secured abandoned prisons. With security monitoring the site around getting inside was never going to be easy, but what we found beyond the walls was worth the risk.

Hidden behind locked gates and towering walls lies a prison frozen in time. From decaying cells and abandoned wings to endless corridors that once housed some of Britain's most notorious inmates, every corner of this place tells a story.

Originally opened in 1844 as Reading Gaol, the prison operated for almost 170 years before being closed by the Ministry of Justice in 2013 as part of a prison modernisation programme. Since then, the site has remained largely empty, with security constantly protecting the historic building from trespassers and vandals.

The prison is best known for housing the legendary writer and playwright Oscar Wilde, who served time here in the 1890s. During his imprisonment, Wilde wrote parts of his famous work De Profundis and later immortalised the prison in his poem *The Ballad of Reading Gaol*. His former cell, known as C.3.3, remains one of the most famous prison cells in Britain.

As we explored deeper into the abandoned prison, the atmosphere became more intense. Knowing security could appear at any moment added another level of tension to the entire experience.

We have thousands homeless . Brits and ex vets . This place is massive . Even in this condition it’s still better than sleeping on the streets in the cold . But they would rather pay some security firm to watch an empty building

The cost of getting this up and running as a prison again or a housing facility for migrants awaiting vetting would be minimal compared to building new. It is in remarkably good shape!

Im 8 mins in watching this you boys are nuts in a good way im a ex prisoner at this establishment one of the last prisoners to be shipped out before closing down brings back some memories allready and im only 8 mins in cant wait to see the inside of my old temporary home i was 19 at the time when i was there im 33 now just so you know im doing well lads changed my life around.

Ex prisoner myself lads that is the kitchen the hatch is for serving the trays of food then it's put into a truck type thing which then takes it round to the difrent wings there should be two kitchens to serve the hole prison M D Fenwick

Its wild to me that in a time when we are letting out dangerous offenders early due to shortages in the prison system we have places like this that would serve perfectly fine for less dangerous offenders if they updated it a bit.
