Utumno: Morgoth's First Hell | Tolkien's Original Evil Explained
Ranger of the Realms
16,594 views
What was Utumno? Why did Morgoth's first fortress shape every evil that came after it? In this deep dive, we explore Utumno, the Deep-hidden pit Melkor delved beneath the Iron Mountains before the Elves had even awakened, the prototype for every dark stronghold in Tolkien's legendarium. From its buried galleries Melkor cast down the Two Lamps, gathered the Balrogs, and bred the first Orcs in mockery of the Elves, a horror Tolkien himself could never fully explain. When the Valar broke the gates and chained Melkor, they left the deepest vaults unsearched, and Sauron escaped. That single failure seeded Angband, Dol Guldur, Barad-dur, and the Balrog of Moria, the word Udun echoing from Morgoth's first hell to a wizard on a bridge.

In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. (The Hobbit. 1937).
In a hole in the ground there lived a right nasty bastard. (The Silmarillion. 1977).
I always think of Utumno as looking like H.R.Giger art packed with Xenomorphs.
The Age of Sauron was far lesser with the Orcs coming across as more lower working class humans and sometimes comical.
