What was Angband? Where did Morgoth forge his armies of darkness? The Iron Prison stands as the most terrifying fortress in Tolkien's Silmarillion - a stronghold that makes Barad-dur look like a watchtower. Beneath the volcanic peaks of Thangorodrim, Morgoth built an industrial empire of evil: blast furnaces forged weapons of war, breeding pits spawned dragons and werewolves, and time itself became a weapon against prisoners like Maedhros and Hurin.

Yet this seemingly impregnable fortress was repeatedly penetrated - by Fingon's desperate rescue, by Beren and Luthien stealing a Silmaril from Morgoth's very crown. How could the mightiest stronghold in Middle-earth history have such fatal flaws? The answer reveals Tolkien's deepest insight: building Angband drained Morgoth's divine power until the Dark Lord feared to leave his own fortress.
