The account of that phone call comes from Lindsey Buckingham, and it is the single most contested claim in this story. In his telling, two nights after the band accepted an award together in January 2018, the manager rang to say Stevie Nicks would not stand on a stage with him again.
He asked whether he was being removed. He was. On February 28 he wrote to Mick Fleetwood asking the band to stay together and got no answer, and when he sued that October his lawyers had no contract to point at — because in forty-three years, the five of them had never signed one. The page the Eagles kept sealed is a page Fleetwood Mac never wrote.

Buckingham played with Don Everly, who was trying to start a solo career, and Don canceled the tour after only a few shows, leaving Lyndsey, who had thought he'd finally be making money broke and pissed off.
She didn't stay home, she followed him to Colorado and wrote Landslide in Aspen, and when the tour was canceled, he took it out on her, and they had a huge fight, because they were always fighting, and she told him FU, I'm not riding back to California with you, so he loaded their stuff, his gear, and her dog and left, leaving her stranded in Colorado with no money. ( that's not quite as bad as it sounds- her father was a VP of Greyhound, and she could have a free ticket from anywhere to anywhere in the United States. Unfortunately for her, that was the day Greyhound workers went on strike, and she was forced to call her parents for a plane ticket home) And when she got home they were no longer a couple, but stayed together musically and that they had no place to live but sleeping at Bob Dashut's house.
They didn’t have "disagreements", and their ongoing arguments are legendary
She was waitressing because they needed money and could set her own hours, and she'd put in an 8 hour shift for 12 bucks and tips, and sometimes 12, and come home to find Lyndsey passed out with whoever had been there, and she'd have to clean up the mess. They had agreed for him to stay home and work on the music, while she worked, and he stayed home smoking pot and playing guitar, but she resented it. Then they would stay up until 5 am, working on music, and the later it got, and the more he drank, the more dismissive and verbally abusive he got, tearing into her songs, which was the most important thing to her. She was exhausted.
That's when they started doing cocaine when they could afford it, just to stay awake and make it another day.
That's when her dad visited and was horrified by how skinny she was. They didn't have any money, and would split a hamburger or a slice of pizza for dinner. ( yes, I imagine she could eat at work).
(One correction I'll add here. The information I had from several sources was her dad visited her in October. I have since read in an interview she said she had visited her parents in Phoenix in September, then went to Colorado, and when she called for a plane ticket, her parents were pissed because they didn't know she was in Colorado, what she was doing there, and why she needed a ticket, but Lyndsey did pack up their stuff and Ginny and left her. Said it was around Halloween (natch...) when she got back)
There's a picture of her from 1974 in her waitress uniform behind a bar and she looks absolutely exhausted, defeated, disillusioned and her chance had slipped through her fingers, and
she promised her dad if it didn't happen for them, and looked like it never would, she would give it six more months, and then come home and register for school in the fall.
That was October
Mick called NYE in December.
They decided they needed to stay together when they joined FM, but that only put off the inevitable for a year.
The romanticized version of Rumours is that they got to Sausalito in 1976 and the couples broke up. They had already broken up before they joined the band, but needed to remain a musical partnership. The insane touring schedule of the second half of 1975 didn't help.
The entire point being, she didn't just start hating him. She loved him, and needed him to make her ideas into the songs she loved, but he was controlling and abusive, and she resented and hated him the entire time even when she loved him.
Love/hate for 50 years.
AI passed over the most important part that explains why the tension, bickering and shutting each other out never stopped. It's who they are.
( And because FM BN rabbit holes never come to an end, I just read quotes from Stevie saying their breakup was "a living nightmare" and "He and I are about as compatible as a boa constrictor and a rat" and they had to be physically separated during the recording of Rumours. .... it's who they were)
And btw, hate is not the opposite of love. Apathy is.
