I am absolutely loving the Mythical-Dropout-Green Brothers extended universe, it’s like the very best of internet culture has coalesced into one thing.

YouTube's nicest science boy talks to YouTube's nicest food boy

This is the most wholesome second date I've ever seen

I always speak English for the first few minutes after I wake up from anesthesia, which wouldn't be weird, except I'm Danish.

Hank and Josh bring such different but complementary flavors of "unhinged uncle who is the most fun to talk to at the reunion"

It is wild to me that they had a whole discussion about whether human meat is vegan and never touched on the question of whether human milk is vegan, which is a question people have to answer all the time.

For the human meat question, HOW DO THEY NOT discuss the placenta? It is the most “actual meat” version of cannibalism that is pretty common/socially acceptable

Hank please see this comment I just went down an hour long rabbit hole trying to figure out, if humans had feathered wings, would chemo make our feathers fall out?

I can't find any evidence of avian chemo causing feather loss, and feather and hair development happens differently so my current hypothesis is no, but new ones would have a hard time growing.

Would love to see if you can find anything I missed!

Hey, linguist here :) I study sociophonetics, and you guys pretty much hit the nail on the head - there are many different factors that go into pronunciations of loan words, many of them cultural and social but also many that are phonological (related to the systems of sounds of each individual language). There isn’t a clear line of when a word from another language becomes fully adapted into the native language, but it usually has to do with time (historically, when it was first adopted) and frequency of use. Studies have shown that it’s typically bilingual speakers being the first to introduce these new words into a language, with monolingual speakers approximating them according to their own phonological rules and, as time goes on, the words are assimilated into the language with little to no remnants of the original language’s phonology. There are other ways this can happen, of course, such as adopting words that were only read online/in books and never heard pronounced (my favorite example is Greenwich in Mandarin Chinese). Tamales is also a great example of back-formation, where English speakers interpreted the plural suffix as “-s” instead of “-es” in Spanish, leading to the singular “tamale”.

A really fascinating case is from Japanese, where they have different phonological systems for words of different origins. That is, words of native Japanese origin behave differently and allow different sound structures than words of Chinese origin, versus words of English origin, versus onomatopoeia (Ito & Mester, 1995; Akita, 2008). If this interests anyone, I highly recommend looking more into loanword phonology, it’s one of the coolest fields I’ve had the privilege of studying!

Hank, Recently I had a molar pulled, and to prep the site for a future implant, the surgeon packed the hole with a medium to promote bone growth. The medium was fully or partially made of ground human cadaver bone. During the healing process, grains of human bone were expelled from the incision as it healed. I spent 10 days picking tiny bits of someone else out of my mouth. I assume that I inevitably ingested some of the material. Does this make me a cannibal? Afterall, I consumed human tissue to promote the growth of my own tissue. These thoughts once kept me up at night, but I have since made peace with it. Now I crave bonemeal.

"how englishly or non englishly are we supposed to pronounce non english words" IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS ONE MY WHOLE LIFE!!!!
im bilingual french canadian and have no clear instincts at all

Every time I have moved without using a company, I have at some point in the process yelled “I BET ANTS COULD MAKE IT FIT 😡”

Ants are better at maneuvering objects around obstacles than us and it’s very humbling.

maybe one of the first guests i'm confident could find hank's exact answers before he says them.

Josh's charisma is wild. He's always moments away from making out with whomever he's interviewing or being interviewed by. He generates eye sparkle, ppl talking to him just have a gleam that isn't always there. It's fun.

Fun fact: in a Dutch TV show the hosts did actually eat human meat. The show was called "proefkonijnen" (guinea pigs), and it was basically about a bunch of science experiments, some of them very far out there like "what does human meat taste like?". The hosts got a piece of their thigh surgically removed, which was then cooked, and they ate each others meat on camera.
It caused a whole ruckus. Some politicians actually tried to prosecute them, but it was eventually decided that it was completely ethical.

I'm a nothing hotdog enjoyer, which has lead to me being snobby about hotdogs. The $1.00 for 8 style dogs are absolutely terrible. I've never accepted the "vehicle for toppings" justification for something being terrible. I want the base food to be good on its own, and the toppings should be a bonus. The pizza crust should be tasty on its own!

As a zookeeping major, it is a running joke in our class that the minute octopus figures out how to live longer than 4 years the human race is done for cuz they’re so dang smart. And we really have no idea how because they’re not a social species like any of the rest of the super smart species usually are.

“We cut a question for time” ….please don’t do that. The longer they waffle on and the randomer the questions, absolutely the better it ends up being!!

Fun (?) hot dog fact, because I have ARFID and have a very limited diet, my mom made me hot dogs a lot as a kid. I requested no bun, no toppings, just a boiled dog. For years I didn't understand why no other hot dogs tasted the same, I'd get them at sporting events, concerts, BBQs, no hot dogs tasted "right". Found out in my 20's that mom had always bought me turkey dogs to help me be healthier but never told me lol
