Twelve budget and value tyre brands you can actually buy in South Africa, ranked from the ones that failed independent tests to the four that earned their money: Firemax, Radar, Tomket, GT Radial, Hifly, Ceat, Sumitomo, Apollo, Laufenn, Hankook, Kumho and Falken.

Every result comes from two big European summer tyre tests in 205/55R16, the size on a Golf, an A3 or a Corolla: Auto Bild 2024 (55 tyres) and the ADAC 2023 (50 tyres on a VW Golf 8). Each tyre is compared with the best tyre in the same test, never across tests. Prices are South African shop and TyreCompare listings, checked in September and October 2026.

The surprise: at the same shop, the Sumitomo BC100 and the Falken ZE310 Ecorun are R5 apart and come from the same owner, Sumitomo Rubber. In Auto Bild's wet braking test from 80 km/h, the Falken stopped 5.2 m shorter. Plus the tread depth rule most drivers miss (regulation 212), how to read the DOT date code, and why a cheap part-worn tyre can be illegal before it's fitted.

What tyres are on your car right now, and did you choose them or did the fitment centre? Tell us in the comments.

⚠️ Test results apply to the specific tyre model and size tested; manufacturers update their products. Prices change daily and vary by size, speed rating and shop. Auto Bild states its 2024 test was supported by several tyre makers. Always check the exact model and get advice from a qualified fitment centre before you buy.
