I bought 12 olive oil brands from UK supermarkets and scored them on transparency. Only 4 passed. EU fraud notifications tripled. UK testing found 1 in 5 samples failing compositional requirements. Some bottles use clear plastic that degrades the oil before you even open it. Others hide harvest dates so you can't tell if it's fresh or three years old. I built a 10-point scorecard based on official standards - PDO certification, harvest dates, origin clarity, packaging quality. The results will change how you shop. Aldi, Lidl, and one budget brand with QR traceability shocked me. Premium brands charging £15+ scored worse than discount options. This is the investigation supermarkets don't want you to see.

Brands to AVOID (low scores — 1–7/10)
These had major transparency red flags (clear plastic, no harvest date, vague “EU oils” blends, no region/PDO info):
Tesco Extra Virgin → 1/10 (worst — clear plastic + vague blend)
Sainsbury’s standard → 4/10
Morrisons The Best Unfiltered → 5/10
Tesco Finest → 5/10
Waitrose Duchy Organic Spanish → 5/10
Asda Extra Special Greek Koroneiki → 6/10
Waitrose No.1 Valle Trapanese PDO → 7/10 (still not great)
Brands that PASSED / Recommended (high scores — 9–10/10)
Aldi Specially Selected Terra di Bari PDO → 10/10 (dark glass, harvest date, specific Puglia origin, PDO, great value ~£10/liter)
Belazu Early Harvest Arbequina → 10/10 (dark glass, single-estate Catalonia, very traceable)
Lidl Primadonna → 9/10 (dark glass, regional Italian options, strong value)
Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference Toscano PGI → 9/10 (dark glass, Tuscany PGI, QR code)
Terra Delyssa → 9/10 (dark glass, Tunisian single origin with QR traceability to groves)
General advice that applies anywhere (including the US)
Look for dark glass or tin, a harvest date within the last 18–24 months, specific origin (e.g., “Puglia, Italy” or “Tuscany PGI”), PDO/PGI labels, and QR/batch traceability. Avoid clear plastic bottles and vague “blend of EU oils” labels. Price isn’t everything — some supermarket own-brands beat expensive ones on transparency.
