He never loses his cool. But he also won't quit.

Class

MTV was new and David Bowie was a super famous rock star for many years. So he could influence MTV and school them in the direction they were going. Bowie didn't need any of them to like him. He was already iconic. Good for him for pushing the boundaries as he always did.

Time to listen to some Bowie! I think he has the most prolific musician of the last century. He is credited with writing around 500 songs through his 50 year career.

I remember watching this interview as it happened (im old) and I was happily blown away at how he went at him.

Bowie was frightened of nobody, and no topic was off limits for him. He was the most interesting popular music artist there has ever been. If something interested him, he was doing it, whether it ruined his career or displeased his fans, he did it. And he was clever. It is a pity you only know him from a kids film he did, and not from the main thing he did, which was his musical output. More than anyone else, he was the one that combined visual effects on stage to make concerts more interesting. Check out his song "Heroes", which is a sort of anthem for sticking your neck out and taking a chance.

If you've ever seen videos of David's performances from his early days, you'd know he doesn't believe in rules when it comes to music and fashion. He wore dresses and bright colored makeup and hair. He was unique and didn't care what anybody else thought about him.

Great discussion.

Welcome back guys! Where've you been?

I think the interviewer knew what was happening too -- he was quite rightly under attack, and was fighting a desperate rearguard action (of lame excuses)!    :0)

Omg wow 😦😳 you guys are back what happened to the other guy who was with you!?... why did you guys disappear for 2 years!? ... I was worried about you all !!!
I hope you don't ever fade again!!!

Have you seen the video where David Bowie gets too deep and philosophical for the interviewer,  so the interviewer asks about his shoes?

1:24 The black station playing music videos was likely BET which started in 1980 a year before MTV aired

Oh, there's been a rise in power of the far right parties across Europe, so to say that Europe is not racist would be completely wrong. This interview is down to David Bowie having something to say. MTV wanted star interviews to promote their channel, so Bowie took that opportunity to confront them on something that he cared about.

Bowie was one of the few black artists to appear live on Soul train.

Dt are you guys coming back to utube? I miss the shows.

The truth is that Mtv was racist against Black people in those early days. Growing up in those times we didn't care what race a person was as long as we liked the songs they sang. Once Mtv realized that they could make even more money from them they started airing Black videos a little bit at a time. They made tons of money airing Michael Jackson's Thriller vid for example because they knew it would draw in tons of viewers.

I got so excited!, and then no Joe.

Young lady needs to hear some Bowie dammit..

Look up one of his 1st interviews from the 60's about cruelty to men with long hair, he spoke up for the marginalised ALL his life, lgbt folks truly owe him big time for the changes he helped bring about.
If the creators did see this they could look up the battle of Bamber Bridge.

5.28  You're absolutely right! Certainly the white kids in Great Britain couldn't get enough of black music from the late fifties -- and that's from jazz and blues and rock'n'roll and soul, through to reggae and ska and rock and hip-hop, and on and on.    :0)
