At 68 I retired to Iloilo, in the Philippines. Two years later I needed gallbladder surgery — the exact thing I had been afraid of my whole retirement. This is my story: the fear, the night it started, the hospital, the people who didn't let me go through it alone, and what the bill actually meant for me.
