About twenty five years after this, the first black captain of the Springboks, Siya Kolisi, became the third South African captain to lift the Rugby World Cup.
I hated it, because I'm English and they beat us in the final. But I was inspired by what it represented.
This part is basically accurate. Madiba overrode the decision to cancel the Bokke. It was slightly different from depiction in movie, but he did it, used his moral stature to do it.
Unbelievably changed the way Afrikaners felt about Madiba. He took generations of racism which whites felt against blacks, not a sense of hate, but a misguided superiority towards them. And when Madiba walked out; after all my people did to him; with that number 6 Springbok jersey, as a 10 year old at the time, my generation became the Madiba generation, a generation that was filled with hope for the new South Africa.
Now, 31 years later, the Springboks the brightest symbol of hope in South Africa/
This encapsulates how to deal with the spirits of anger and revenge. Not stoking the flames for further degradation and destruction. But an egocentric appeal to the humanity within and it's need for healing and growth.
It's interesting to think that the future of a united South Africa rested in rugby and that if the springbok had been cut it could have led to a chain of events that could have resulted in an Afrikaner breakaway country or even a civil war.
Sometimes, to get the big picture, you need to focus closely on that one microcosm that stands for the whole. Mandela knew that. This film did that. A tour de force all round. 🙌
