Ford took an ordinary Transit van and turned it into one of the most outrageous promotional vehicles of the 1970s — and now Scalextric have brought the legendary Supervan back in 1:32 scale.

In this video we're taking a close look at the newly released Scalextric Ford Transit Mk1 Supervan, opening the box, checking out the detail and comparing it with the incredible real machine that inspired it.

The original Supervan appeared in 1971 and combined classic Mk1 Transit bodywork with serious racing-car engineering, including a powerful V8 mounted behind the driver. With more than 400 horsepower and a top speed approaching 150mph, this was about as far removed from an ordinary delivery van as you could get.

We'll take a quick look at the history of the real Supervan, some of the fascinating engineering behind it, and then see how well Scalextric have captured the stance, detailing and character of this legendary Ford.

I'm not running the model in this video as I don't currently have the space to set up a proper Scalextric circuit, but we'll definitely come back to it for a track test in the future.

Did you ever see the original Supervan — and what classic vehicle would you like Scalextric to recreate next?

Thanks for watching.
