Mel Robbins' book has sparked controversy.

In May 2023, her video about discovering the Let Them Theory went viral. However, from the start, she failed to credit where or from whom she heard the concept. While Let Them isn’t new, Mel ignores that this particular Let Them moment had already gone viral, inspired by a poem by Cassie Phillips in late 2022. Where HAD she "just heard about this thing called the Let Them Theory"?

Despite claiming extensive research, Mel omits this context in her book and publicity. She also portrays herself as the catalyst for people getting Let Them tattoos, yet this trend began in 2022, long before her involvement.

Mel claims her discovery happened at a high school prom, but the timeline doesn't match. Her original video was posted the day before her son's prom. In a podcast on May 29th, 2023, she says she’d been practising the theory for some time, implying she knew about it before she "just heard about it," as described in a viral May 13th video.

She has shared this story with prominent figures like Oprah, Simon Sinek, Mayim Bialik, Kelly Clarkson, and Lewis Howes and mainstream platforms like The Today Show. Millions trust these voices, yet key details have been overlooked, shaping a misleading and exclusionary narrative.

So why has Mel altered the timeline? And why does her version erase the fertile ground that led to the movement from which she is profiting?

The bigger issue here is that most self-help, motivational gurus are just very clever, savvy business people who are good at marketing.

If someone wants to plaigerize your work, DON'T let them.

The arrogance of her “I discovered” is beyond cringe.

i mean Buddha's teaching about detachment is about 2500 years ago

I am honestly so confused as to why the concept of "let them" even needed a whole book to flesh out AT ALL. 🤦‍♀🤦‍♀

Her legacy is plagiarism.

I’ve never had a good vibe about Mel. This confirms my vibe.

She went from “controlling” in her words, to “feeling superior.” Sounds like a great enlightened being…

@Movingavarice 1 year ago

This was brilliantly put together. Not mocking, not an ounce of schadenfreude. You let the material speak for itself because it needed to be said. I’m impressed.

"WE spend so much time trying to control other people." No Mel. No, we don't all do that.

Both the poem and this woman's book are nothing more than insights to one of the core component beliefs that stoics practice. "I cannot control the world around me, but I can control the way I react to it".

I been saying that shit for at least 25 years.

Imagine being such a narcissist that when you have to give up control you have to reassert control by turning it into some profound life changing act of martyrdom and use it to seek attention to heal the wounding from the loss of control.

Notice how the original poem is about things like being left out or abandoned and finding peace with things that hurt, and this chick finds letting her kids enjoy their own fucking prom as some deeply painful thing to release control over. Outrageous.

I stopped reading when she described her passive aggressive interaction with a man on a plane who couldn’t stop coughing, instead of asking him if he was ok and if he needed water or something she was incredibly rude and made it all about herself. I think that shows what kind of person she is.

She want plagiarism to be her legacy? LET HER

The way Mel describes “let them” as “feeling superior” really says a lot… to me “feeling superior” is not the message of “let them.” But it does show her ego and why she really latched onto this.

It would have cost her nothing to acknowledge Ms Phillips. But as you said there is a lack of integrity. She could have used her platform to boost Ms Phillips poem, and expand on the theory. She chose to claim someone's work as her own. Narcissist vibes.
