So about the, uh "slap-wrist" you're half right. There are a few ways to shoot a puck, two of them are known as a "wristshot" or a "slapshot". A slapshot is when you see him doing on a one-timer, a massive windup and a powerful release. A wristshot is when you drag the puck along the ice, using the weight of your body to shoot it. The slapshot is becoming less common of a shot and the wristshot is more common.
About two way players, there are many player archetypes in hockey. Snipers, playmakers, enforcers, grinders, offensive defensemen, two-way players are you mentioned. Here Ovechkin is the prime example of a modern day "power forward", which are usually big strong goalscorers. They are difficult to take down, they can go around you or through you, and have a pretty good shot. Ovechkin is a unique player because of how he hits and scores. Finding a guy who is 6' 3 and 230lbs who is fast and agile is rare, he also recovers from injuries pretty quickly. People say that there are big players who can match him physically but can't keep up with his skating, and how there are small players who can keep up or even outskate him but they can't match him physically. Ovechkin is also top 5 on the all time hitting list if I remember correctly. He loves to hit and it's a part of his game, while hitting can be used defensively and offensively to stop a play dead in it's tracks Ovechkin isn't known for his defensive skill. He's mainly an offensive powerhouse. There are many two-way players though.
As for who is better, Gretzky or Ovechkin... I think no one will argue Gretzky being the best. Gretzky over his 20 year career rewrote the record books so drastically that trying to picture any of it happening today hurts my mind, he holds so many awards and records. He has the most goals, assists, and hat-tricks than anyone else to such a degree that it's ridiculous. If you take away all of his goals, all of his assists would still make him #1 all time in total points (to help you understand what a point is, a goal and an assist is equally worth one point in hockey. So if a player gets a goal and two assists in one game that's a three point night). Ovechkin still has a few years on him and it's not a debate of if he'll beat the record, it's a debate of when. You can make the argument that Ovechkin is a better goalscorer than Gretzky though.
