I too have ditched the 2” foam in favour of 1/2” foam as base forms. Much easier access to the track and wiring. Nice to see your pros and cons discussed openly. Good work.

Thanks for sharing, have to go back and check out your Youttube channel.  Nice to see more Canadian's posting. I model THB in N,  with no reference to actual places.  For pushing wire through more than an inch or so of foam I found that it is worth drilling it with a long drill and inserting a tube.   Thanks for sharing.  Been using mostly foam for 'terra-forming' on my layout.  Also use ceiling tiles in places.  I do find cutting foam with anything other than a hot wire tool creates a pink mess to be cleaned up and it clings to everything.  For bigger bits I use a bandsaw with 4" sawdust sucker attached.  Helps with the mess.

New subscriber. And I used the same method to build up my scenery. I use construction adhesive to hold the foam.

Awesome Video and taking notes. Although I am using a similar technique to your first layout use many of the same techniques you are currently using for building up scenery. As you said blending is key when using and method. Love your layout and watching it come to life.

great video! i'm currently going though what you experienced on your previous layout 😅. i have really enjoyed the birthday cake method with foam though. the results are fantastic when you take your time.

One reason I prefer working with foam over with plywood is the foam scraps are much more likely to be useable and less is wasted.

Nice work and thank you for sharing. I found a great way to deal with the challenges of building big terrain features with foam is to model central Iowa... Problem solved!

I really like how you describe your thought process. You obviously have a talent for this as evidenced by the look of your railway thus far, great work. Do you find that the foam eats away at your Olfa cutter fairly quickly? I’m torn as to what to use for cutting the foam board to use on my teeny tiny 😅 coffee table layout.

Pelle Soeberg made use of foam sheets with pieces stacked vertically (like books on a shelf).  I think this might have helped add more variation.  Might also have used more foam for a given scene; I'm not sure there...

Nice bench work. And your river looks great.  I gave up on the foam, except for things like ridge lines. I built a large mountain using the old screen wire method. Looks 100x better. The stacking, even with the plaster cloth - just doesn’t look good.

I don't think the lines where the sheets are stacked looks bad.  You have those same types if cracks and layers in real b sedimentary rock.  Nice layout!

Are you worried about putting your hand though the foam if you have to lean into the scene?

I have a question. What happens if you get a derailment? Wouldn’t the—heaven forbid—locomotive and assorted railcars end up rolling down the hill and hitting the floor? I ask because it happened to me with an expensive locomotive. 😬
