One of the most celebrated and controversial episodes of WW2 - and the biggest airborne assault in history. Famous above all for the plight of the tiny force of British Paratroopers under John Frost, trapped at one end of the bridge at Arnhem, cut off from their comrades who are forced to dig in around the nearby Dutch town of Oosterbeek. Montgomery's bold plan, to cross the Rhine and encircle Nazi Germany’s industrial heartland, hopes to bring a swift end to the war while the Germans are still reeling from their catastrophic retreat out from France. But the operation, depending on a British armoured column advancing up a single 100km road to link up with American and British airborne, soon goes badly wrong. Above all nobody seems to have planned or prepared for the speed and ferocity of the German response...
