1990s video games as TTRPGs 📺

The old thing I miss is when there were a lot of risky attempts at new thing.

I’m an old thing.  Thanks for the shout out

The irony of wearing the Zelda shirt as Nintendo releases Ocarina of Time again — chef's kiss

Hi Bob! I don't know if you'll see this comment,  but I just wanted to tell your videos are great and that I try to watch them as soon as possible.  I'm not financially stable, so I can't support you monetarily,  but I just wanted to say thanks from a Belgian fan

People with review copies are saying that the books have a tremendous amount of overlap, such that it is mostly just a 5.5 refresh of Van richton's guide to ravenloft.

Virginia creeper is the Plant type monster that constantly emerges under the fence from my neighbour's yard and threatens my potato pots.

I have never been more called out by a YouTube intro in my life. Particularly as a former Blockbuster employee!

2:55 you know what? this is the most profoundly true statement of the entire video. support your local libraries! write your mp or congressman to keep them funded!

My problem with raven loft is just the feeling of "again"?

I appreciate the dedication to capitalizing every OLD THING in the subtitles

Re Poison Ivy: Use Dawn dish soap and a rough paper towel or washcloth to scrub effected contact areas. If you missed after initial contact and you start itching you can use the same method to wash off any time before blisters break. Treat it like invisible crankcase oil in terms of the effort involved. Test today with removing some dirty oil on your skin so you'll be prepared when encountering the poison ivy shambling mound of doom.

Old things can be so fun. Just had an old-school game night of halo 1 with the bros and we had more fun then we have had playing new games recently

At 68 and have my own nostalgia for the 70s.  But I do find annoying how both the Old School crowd and the 5.whatever  boosters ignore the amazing new games and systems from Free League or Green Ronin, or if you like nostalgia the faithful refreshes of Pendragon from Chaosium or Traveller from Mongoose.

I know D&D is the big draw, verging on clickbait, but it’s a big imaginary world out there and “my death system is different” or “my orcs are special” is not the innovation people seem to think it is.

Sure, being 18 again would be great, but if an old fart like me can ditch nostalgia so can everyone else.

That intro got me 😂

I think nostalgia has always been one of the key reasons Ravenloft comes back to life every edition, because the original I6 came out at a key point in the game's history -- 1983 saw the release of both the WoG box set and the Mentzer red box, in Dragon magazine articles you could practically see the game evolving in real-time, and there were several other influential adventures that really stand out as highlights of early adventure design -- but I6 shone, at a glance it was just better designed than earlier modules, it was innovative and modern

But in 1984 there were stumbles, and there's no need to repeat the debates of what went right & what went wrong in 1985/6

You had a lot of people in the mid-late 80s looking back from the other side of 1985 and thinking how great 1983 had felt, TSR's trajectory had (from the outside) looked golden, and the WoGbox, red box, and I6 seemed to be defining the future of the game -- the people who felt like like something was wrong with D&D in '87 were already nostalgic for '83, and every edition since has lauded Ravenloft as an iconic example of D&D-done-right

It crops up in many art forms, but some are more impacted by it than others. Is Elvis Presley better than Taylor Swift? Why isn't the music industry trying to find the next Elvis Presley? Movies have similar symptoms to RPGs, but for (slightly) different reasons -- sequel #17 of a well-known franchise is (relatively) safe money-earner, even if the most vociferous fans proclaim their hatred of everything after sequel #4

The interesting thing will be the response to the Greyhawk book when it comes out -- the GH Grognards have been very critical of the sprinkling of GH lore we've seen in 5.5, will criticisms of modern D&D by those most nostalgic for classic GH be trumped by the attachment of the Gygax name? Who's the audience for that book?

TBH I would recommend people be safe rather than sorry with poison ivy and poison oak... Like, depending on where on the plant the leaves are growing and at what point of their growth cycle, the edges of the leaves might be scalloped or smooth; the leaves might be narrow and pointy or practically round; the stem and leaves could be green or yellow or red or all of the above; and the plant can look like a tiny shrub "harmlessly" trampled under foot, or it can hang down on tree limbs overhead to caress your cheek... If you see a plant with leaves in groups of three, and its stem doesn't have thorns on it, I would say there's no harm in a little bit of careful caution and avoiding it; it's generally preferable to not trample the brush anyway! Plus, more people afraid of the greenery means more raspberries and wineberries for me!

What made 2e so cool to me was the utter lack of lore. The Forgotten Realms were young, Greyhawk was young, everything was new. You had the PHB referencing folklore heroes and setting campaigns in historic periods. Now everything is recycled, churn that publishing edition cash. It's like old school textbooks where they come us with a new edition and add like a few paragraphs but literally the same book

if you can identify poison oak, please do so in future walks!
