For two years, Hans Eckstein lived in a world of steel, stone, and sand. He witnessed all the major battles of the North African campaign from the very beginning, experiencing the development of the German armored forces from the Panzer I to the Panzer IV as a commander, loader, and radio operator. In 2024, at the age of 101, he is certainly the last living witness who can look back on such a military career. He is one of the few veterans of the first North African campaign who escaped capture during the surrender in Tunisia. Eckstein spent the subsequent years of the war in Sardinia, Corsica, and Italy, ultimately serving as a commander of an assault gun.
