Why do some insects look like they were never meant to exist?
From impossible helmets to flowers that hunt, this video reveals the biology behind eight of the strangest insects on Earth.

The journey begins with the Brazilian treehopper's mysterious helmet, the orchid mantis that deceives pollinators and a wax-tailed nymph built to land on its feet. Next come the giraffe weevil's leaf-origami nursery and the featherhorn beetle's extraordinary chemical antennae. The trilobite beetle, dragon caterpillar and peanut lanternfly complete the lineup with neoteny, defensive mimicry and startling false faces. Together, these weird insects and rare bugs show how camouflage, sexual selection and survival pressure can produce bodies that barely look real.

Which of these insects looks the least real to you, and which trick would you bet is the cleverest?
