You wouldn’t believe he had TB aged 12-14 a serious lung infection that killed a lot of people in the UK. He was confined to his bedroom for the 2 years and as he had TB he could not work in the coal mine. He listened to the radio and discovered and learned how to control his voice. His Mother took care of him and would not allow him to go into a TB Hospital. I think we have his Mother to thank for taking good care of him. We are blessed to listen to Sir Toms Voice even now at the age of 86 ❤😁

As others have commented, you MUST watch him performing live. It's an experience. He's a rare performer, like Elvis Presley, who brings his everything to a live performance. He's electrifying!

Green green grass of home is a song that depicts Tom was imprisoned and received the death penalty and was laid to rest beneath the green green grass of home

Glad you're digging Tom. He is incredible.

Tom Jones is touring in the US right now, don't miss seeing and hearing this legend live 🎤🎶🎵 Oct 2026

Please please watch him in live performances. It's a whole different experience. He had a TV show and you can easily find videos of amazing live performances like:
I Who Have Nothing
Treat Her Right
Raise Your Hand (with Janis Joplin)

On the show he and guest artists often performed a medley of both their hits. Check out Tom and his medleys with Stevie Wonder and Wilson Pickett.

And definitely watch him on the British version of the show The Voice when he and Jennifer Hudson sing It's a Man's World together.

Every performance listed above is jaw-dropping.

My mom loved Tom Jones and her favourite song was Delilah, without knowing what it was about. I love those singers who have the natural power in their voice.

The "A=Tom-ic" Jones!

Tom originally sang the demo on ‘It’s Not Unusual’ for singer Sandy Shaw. Sandy said it wasn’t right for her, but whoever that was singing it on the demo should record it. Thus, Tom’s career was launched.
‘Green, Green Grass of Home’ was a country hit for Porter Waggoner in ‘65. Then Tom heard it covered on a Jerry Lee Lewis album. Tom released it in ‘66 and enjoyed a worldwide smash.
I think you missed the fact that Tom is singing this song from prison and he will be executed the next morning when they ‘lay him ‘neath the GGGOH.’
Little known fact, Elton John is singing background vocals on ‘Delilah.’

Kind of something you'd hear in a theatrical play, a musical.

Thank you, Russell ~ Thank you, Sohum ~ Another singing great who knew (technically) how to sing, as he still sounds good performing in his 80s ~!!!

The first time I heard Tom Jones I was sitting in the back seat of the family station wagon. I couldn't be more shocked at this new interest in him. Pleased but, shocked.

What came to mind with the lyrics on waking to the 4 grey walls around him was a prison cell. As if the last song was a followup to Delilah. He's now in prison for killing her & dreaming of the sweet girl he left behind---the grass is greener, the passion he found destroyed him. And when he died, or was executed, he returned home, to be buried in the place and peace he would have had, could have had.

You really need to listen to Sir Tom Jones and Dusty Springfield, I’m going to make you love me ❤

As a complete contrast it would be worth looking at "Praise and Blame" 2010 and "Spirit in the Room" 2012 albums, both Gospel/Blues albums and "Surrounded By Time" 2021. All are excellent but quite a contrast to his early albums. Also Sohum, you have to play his James Bond theme "Thunderball", which will knock you out ( as it nearly did to him when he recorded it).

Now you need to go listen to some of his more contemporary stuff - Sex Bomb (ft. Mousse T. or is it the other way around) and his version of the Prince song Kiss by Art of Noise (ft. Tom Jones). He also did a whole album in the 90s with current bands and artists. I love his version of Handbags and Gladrags (with Stereophonics) and I want to say It's Cold Out There with Cerys Matthews (of Catatonia), both fellow Welsh artists. You've just gotta love Tom, he is a legend through and through. Elvis on hearing his voice requested to meet him and they became friends, and it's funny even today seeing his fellow judges on The Voice UK, huge stars in their own rights, swoon over him and I think are on there to be able to say they sang with him, totally starstruck!!!

Green Green Grass of Home always reminds me of the short film "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" - both about nostalgic longing of men before they are put to death. Read the last lyrics again. It is not a homey song.
