The first story, I feel like is from an Indian because I went through something similar during my wedding shopping where my MIL wanted to buy a dress for me for the wedding reception and when my husband send me pictures and I said I didn't like it MIL kept calling me behind his back to push me to select the dress she chose. But thankfully my husband had my back and they got what I selected in the end

I just got married on September 26th and everyone was constantly saying “It’s YOUR day/it’s the bride’s day” even my husband. I was like noooo it’s OUR day equally. It was an incredible wedding. Congratulations to you too Charlotte!! 🎉❤

In the end, the husband saw OP's side, admitted he lashed out because he was sleep deprived himself, and laid out house rules for his mother, all while OP was wearing a sad clown costume. It was magnificent. 😂😂

“His mom is always his priority”?!?! No, no, no. It goes Spouse, Kids, and then extended family like parents and siblings. When you get married, you are committing to making your spouse your priority, no one else.

For that story about the mil waking up OP in the middle of the night, I would have woken up the husband (who sleeps through everything) EVERY SINGLE TIME and told him to take care of his mom! That way he would have been aware of the issue way sooner and been more motivated to get his mom into a new place. It’s his mom, so it should be HIS problem!

She was there uninvited. So, the OP can’t act how she wants on a regular night in her own home?

Definitely don’t apologize. At most say, “This is why it’s probably not a good idea for you to come by when not invited.”

Man that first story gets me as a desi muslim, ngl I do think though there's a blending of culture and religion where cultural practice is taken as religious when it's actually culture and that's what the mother in law seemed like she was doing. Glad op dodged that bullet

As someone who got married after only 4 months of being with my ex husband, I say use me as the cautionary tale. There's a reason he's an ex and I would have understood him better had I waited. My Aunt told me to wait and be with someone for 2yrs before making that commitment. I have now been with husband (not the ex🤣) for over 20yrs and we're still going strong. We're still in the honeymoon phase and I couldn't be happier.

My brother in law lived with us for a while but wasn't helping with anything, disrespected boundaries, and was jsut a horrible roommate. I ended up scaring him out of the house by setting up Halloween stuff like I was doing some witchy spells and stuff and even wrote little "spells" on slips of burned paper that said stuff like "these boots are made for walking" and stuff like that 😂.

Pretty sure that was the fastest he's ever moved out of a place 😂

When we got married, my husband and I got a lot of advice on how to have a good marriage. My Oma (adoptive grandmother) told us that our motto should be “no one above you, not even myself” meaning compromise and prioritizing wanting each other to be happy, not just ourselves (she told my husband the same). My own mother told me “your husband should be your priority over us once you’re married. It should be your husband, then your kids, then your immediate family”. I have never liked a story like this where the spouse refuses to give up the chokehold their family has on them. You had no choice in the family you were born into, but you DO choose your spouse. Why are you choosing someone if they’re not your favorite person?

26:55 my husband and I have a rule- “it’s your family so you need to be the one to deal/confront issues on both our behalf” and vice versa. That way families can’t say “oh she doesn’t like me” or “he doesn’t like us”
