Stannis is so salty about being "stripped of Storm's End" and instead given Dragonstone... when for 300 years Dragonstone's been the official seat of the heir to the Iron Throne, who gets called the Prince of Dragonstone until his ascension.
The history and lore of this series got to be so juicy, the author stopped moving his story forward and has been writing nothing but more and more backstory for the last... 20 years? It's all good but it's frustrating lol. Maester Luwin did have the Valyrian Steel link magic diploma, but his education was apparently shoddy, since magic is so dusty & frowned upon. Orys Baratheon married the defeated Storm King's daughter, so they actually do have that Godsgrief lineage too now. Robert's own grandma was also a Targaryen princess, so he has a little more blood even than that. "Ser Gregor Clegane" was Tywin's attack dog in King's Landing, you've seen / heard of him, Sandor's older brother.
I think we are to understand that all the stuff from the age of heroes like Bran the Builder/Mountain King/Storm King etc was so far back that the stories could be made up or embellished. For sure there is a giant wall and these great castles and keeps but whether mermaids and giant falcons exist in this world is questionable.
With the Andals I think you are to understand they just got mixed in, there have been waves of invasions on the continent.
Just like in our world your boy down the street might be part German or Japanese, they might have ancestors that came on the Mayflower or a slave ship maybe both. Meanwhile, you both may practice a religion that started in the middle east before it went to Rome etc etc
